If you have never walked a mile in a teachers shoes, I suggest you go volunteer in the school system. It will change your mind. Try 35 students in a math class and trying to feel up each other. Eating candy and drinking high sugar sodas. Plus there are other things a teacher must do before they actually begin to teach. Students come to class with no paper, no pencils and 10 minutes late and God forbid no textbook. Yes, there are bad teachers, but most do try to overcome, but next to impossible.

Teachers do have to produce just like people in the real world. They are constantly evaluated and can lose their jobs if they don't meet certain standards The difference with teachers is that there are so many variables that effect the outcome of the finished product. In my opinion the largest detriment to quality education in any system is the lack of parental involvement.
The only difference here,is that teachers evaluations aren't according to some teaching guidelines, it's sccording to whatever kind of job the Principal thinks the teacher is doing. Noone comes in from the State to evaluate the teachers,it's done inhouse.
The quality of the product produced by a Company, is the direct responsibility of the Management of that Company. Have they provided the resources and training to make their employees successful? In Education the fault lies in two diredtions. Administrators and School Boards that are ineffective in achieving desired results. Plus the fact that there are so many Students and so few Teachers of Quality. This opens the door for Nepotism, Cronnyism and general poor hiring practice. Sounds like several School Systems around here doesn't it? If you were managing a work group producing a poor quality product, the Management of that work group would be changed. I haven't seen anything but finger pointing in the schools, instead of developing workable solutions. That is what we are paying the big bucks for. Find a way to improve the proiduct or get the heck out of the way.
Most of the comments are on target. There is a blend of both administrative leadership issues and bad teachers, and there are also many good teachers in the system who really do care about their students. So when you step back and look at the system as a whole, the School Board and administrative leaders must take the blame for the negative emotional responses that are often heard throughout the county. It is the Administration's faulty decision making, and failure to provide appropriate direction that leads to these problems. When 70 % of the teachers are from one institution (ASU) with their problematic and racist views, it will filter over into our younger students growing up in the same environment. Then top that with 50% of the DCSS being related to each other and you have a formula for a lack of discipline and holding people accountable.
Squawker, you have no clue what you are talking about. My daughter is a teacher and I am here to tell you the majority of the teachers produce above and beyond. You spend 1 week in their shoes and make that same comment.
I'm confused. How does your daughter being a teacher qualify you to deem that "the majority of the teachers produce above and beyond"? My daughter is a teacher, too, and I wholeheartedly agree with the squawker. Our daughters being teachers does not qualify us to make judgements about every teacher because obviously we have differing opinions.

It depends on what your definition of production is. Teaching a child is not the same as manufacturing an item. The vast majority of teachers enter the field of teaching as a calling, not because of the great salary and perks, plus summers off. That is the biggest myth about teaching. Most of the teachers that care about doing a good job work well past the time that they could have left, and they often carry home stacks of papers to grade or other paperwork to do. They get advanced degrees or continuing education during the summer so that they can enter a specialized field of education.
Unlike the manufacturing industry, they are salaried. They don't get paid overtime or holiday time, which means they don't make as much an hour as some would think. They do deserve hazard pay for the problems they have to deal with, some of which they can't control because parents do not care until teachers dare to discipline their little angels, and then they come to threaten a lawsuit. There are good and bad teachers, just as there are good and bad manufacturers. However, a manufacturer would be considered non-productive if it kept producing defective goods. A teacher is sent a child from a defective home and is expected to produce a Rhodes scholar.
I'm sure if the Squawker has some clever ideas, the teacher will be happy to hear them. Just be prepared to help keep his/her class under control while the two of you talk.
One other difference. Teachers get paid once a month. If you worked in the manufacturing industry, and they told you that you were going to work your butt off and only get paid once a month,what would you say? You wouldn't keep that job, would you? Yet, we have thousands of people out there that do that every school year. They're called teachers. If they complain once in a while,they deserve it!
What does the pay period structure have to do with keeping a job? I most certainly WOULD keep a job that paid me monthly. Anyone who would quit a job over something as silly as the pay period frankly doesn't deserve that job and is probably looking for any excuse to quit anyway. Plus, teachers and teachers-to-be know ahead of time how their pay period works. It doesn't matter if you get paid daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly for that matter. A paying job is a paying job!
I see what my daughter does and what her co-workers do. That is what qualifies me to make my comment. And, the squawker just needs to walk in their shoes for a week and that comment would definitely change. Just because the administration, DCSS board, etc. suck, does not mean that the teachers as a whole are like them. I cannot imagine dealing day-to-day with the kids from which parents have no control and do not discipline them and to have to educate them and discipline them and have 30 to 35 in a classroom......no, the squawker is definitely WRONG!!!!!
People assume they know what a good teacher is because they were once in school....do they also know how to complete surgery because they have had surgery? Today's society and government has put so many mandates on teachers that they do not have the academic freedom to do what they have been taught to do what is best for children.
Just like their are some doctors out there who are not the best in their professions, there are some teachers who are not the best at their professions. It is not fair to categorize ALL teachers or doctors into the same category.
I agrre that there are some good teachers and some bad teachers. There will always be a problem when the bad ones are guaranteed the same money as the good ones because of a stupid teachers union. And what about still paying all the useless ones that admitted to cheating. All teachers are all grouped together and looked at by using the weakest link.

APS teacher cleared of test-cheating allegation
An Atlanta Public School teacher is fighting to get her job back after she was accused of cheating on several standardized tests, a charge she is now cleared of.

Great! It would be nice to find out that they've been wrong about them all the whole time, although that's highly doubtful.
The moral is, she was accussed, but after a hearing she was exonerated. What happens to all the pre-judging and negative things that were said about her? The GBI after their investigation accused her, how do we deal with the accussations?

Well the BIGGEST part of her problem was SHE Admitted to Cheating when the investigation started. So was she lying then or now?
I'm not sure who accussed her, she was cleared of the accussations. Is she a bad teacher?
Perhaps if teachers received raw materials that were on time and came complete with working parts which were milled or die-cut to fit, or if the materials came perfect so that the production line did not have to stop and wait for 1/2 of the products to be ready, or if the materials came without overseers who demanded special treatment for their part, maybe teachers could produce like a factory.
But when the materials come in half-broken, not prepared, not willing, not caring, having no clue what they will be building, have no desire to build anything, dazed and confused by parental/generational illiteracy and substance abuse, the product will be shoddy.
Help for the teachers is on the way.

I have a Question.
How can BubbaVR the Great Cow Pie Shoveler make the following statement and then claim he knows the accused Teachers are all innocent of the charges. “Research due process. Public Opinion is not considered in a court of law. Your opinion has no value, the facts are determined by the fact finders.” Is it that just his Opinion matters because he is the Great one (in his mind)? Just wondering why?

One teacher "exonerated", as you say, does not mean that all of the rest are not guilty. And let's see if she gets her job back. By using your reasoning, one person in jail that is found to be falsely imprisoned means we should turn them all loose.
Why is it so difficult for you to admit that the children of Dougherty County have been screwed?
The primary issue: No Child Left Behind. Entire states are opting out.
The secondary issues: Poor parent participation, perpetuation of hypocritical ideals and a horrible diet (candy, sodas, fast foods, ect.)
Resolve any of these issues above and witness a domino effect of positive change.
HOW COULD YOU EVER EXPECT ONE PERSON TO CONTROL 20-35 CHILDREN WITH 200 TIMES THE RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF SUGAR IN THERE SYSTEMS?
If the parents would take an active role in their children, you would see a great change in our school system. Teacher are meant to teach and assist the students in learning, but they did not take these children to raise. Give the teachers that deserve it a break.
