ALBANY -- If you've never seen a cop gyrate in a hula hoop, odds are you can catch one doing just that Saturday at North Jefferson Street and Fifth Avenue in Tift Park.
The Albany Police Department Family Protection Unit is hosting its second "A Day With A Cop Picnic" that includes hula hoops, face painting, games for children and free food, all starting at 10 a.m.
"Last year we had 300 people turn out," said Detective Kawaski Barnes. "We had a really good reaction to the picnic and we expect more people this year. People can come out and get to know the police as people."
Several businesses and restaurants have provided gift cards to be given out at the picnic as prizes, Barnes said. There will be water-balloon games, sack races and the ever popular hula hoop competition.
No one will have to compete for the burgers, chips and non-alcoholic beverages. Barnes said there will be plenty on hand.
The Albany Transit System plans to provide buses to bring people to the picnic and return them to the pickup point. The Pickup points are:
-- East Albany: 9:15 a.m. behind Little Caesar's Pizza;
-- Central Albany: 9:30 a.m. at main bus terminal;
-- South Albany: 9:45 a.m. at Gordon Avenue and Slappey Boulevard, Harvey's Supermarket.
