— Dan Bollinger, the executive director of the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission, will join two other candidates in running for the District 5 commission seat in Mitchell County.

Bollinger, who is running as a Democrat in the race, will square off against business-owner Gerald Hagan in the July 31 primary, before taking on banker David G. Sullivan in the November General Election.

Bollinger, who plans to retire from the Regional Commission June 30, has been in community and economic development in Southwest Georgia for 18 years. An Air Force veteran, Bollinger has been in community development for 35 years total.

The incumbant, William Alton "Buddy" Snipes, didn't qualify for re-election, elections officials say.

In a press release sent to the Herald Thursday, Bollinger said that he wants to continue working for the people of Mitchell County.

“Put this Veteran to work for you. I will have the time to use my experience to work for the constituents in District 5, and all of Mitchell County,” he wrote.
