ALBANY -- Just before dawn at Willson Hospice House on May 29, 2012, after a long and painful illness, Janice S. Smith, of Albany, drew her final breath. Her son, James, was with her.

Born January 13, 1944, she was the youngest of six children of James Alton Smith, Sr., and Jennie Lee Sims Smith, both of Sigsbee.

Janice attended Doerun, (GA) schools, graduating with the Class of 1962. An excellent student, with a good sense of humor, she chose to dedicate herself to homemaking and raising a family instead of attending college after graduation. Her "cat-head" biscuits and "from-scratch" layer cakes were the stuff of legend.

Her career included administrative positions with Riverside Manufacturing and Moultrie Grocery companies. After moving to Albany, she became an award-winning life insurance agent, representing New York Life and American General insurance companies, as well as others, during the next fifteen years.

Janice is survived by one daughter, Kavis JaNae Spears of Albany, her primary caregiver throughout her illness, one son, James T. Smith, Jr. of Boston, MA, two granddaughters, Dana Jeriel Lackey, Albany, and Carla Gjarmati, of Vienna, Austria, two sisters, Jeanette S. Veasey of Savannah, and June S. Harrison of Atlanta, one brother, Jack S. Smith of Albany. Two brothers preceded her in death, James A. Smith, Jr. and Lynwood Emmett Smith, who died in infancy.

She will be greatly missed by all including seven nieces, five nephews, and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, Sigsbee, GA at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Ray Jenkins will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions may be made to Willson Hospice House, 320 Foundation Lane, Albany, GA 31701.
