AMERICUS, Ga. — Jessica Lynch, the prisoner who was freed by the U.S. military from a hospital in Iraq after she was injured and captured in 2003, toured Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus on Wednesday. She spoke at the Sumter County Boys & Girls Club’s annual Steak & Stake fundraiser Tuesday night.
“This is definitely one of the most impressive hospitals I have ever seen,” Lynch said of the 76-bed facility that opened last December, four years after an EF3 tornado destroyed the county’s former hospital, Sumter Regional Hospital. “Everything is very nice, and the people are just as nice as well. I definitely will have to come back and visit.”
Lynch also was shown the stained-glass windows in the chapel, which survived the storm and were incorporated into the new structure. “That is an awesome story,” she said. “It shows how important faith is and how it can get you through rough times.”
