ROCHESTER, MN -- Riley H. George, 81, of Rochester, Minnesota, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 12th surrounded by his family, after battling the effects of Parkinson's disease and dementia for several years.
Born in Blakely, Georgia, September 28, 1930 to John Riley and Mary (Holley) George, he grew up in the New Hope community attending New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He served in the U. S. Army from 1950-1952 on active duty in the Korean War. He would later marry Sybil Hartley also of Blakely (Liberty Hill Community). In 1954 they moved to Albany, Georgia. They and their daughters were members of Raleigh White Baptist Church. Riley attended the Albany branch of the University of Georgia studying accounting. He worked in the accounting department for Gulf Oil Corporation and later became branch manager of their bulk plant in Albany.
He felt the call of God to preach his gospel in the early sixties. He did supply preaching at Raleigh White Baptist Church, East Albany Baptist Church, and Mercedes Baptist Church before selling their home and moving to New Orleans. Riley and Sybil completed their seminary training at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. They then moved back to East Albany Baptist Church before Riley became a home missionary pastor with the Southern Baptist Convention.
He served as a pastor for over 30 years in 5 different states. He was a life long student of the bible, even taking Greek and Hebrew classes later in life.
He retired in Rochester, Minnesota where his daughter Susan and her family lived joining the Autumn Ridge Church.
Family survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sybil; two daughters, Susan, (Joe) Kane of Rochester and Carol, (Kent) Wohler of Geneva, IL.; four grandchildren, Tara(Andrew) Brannon of Peoria, IL., Erina(Eric) Prom of Hugo, MN., Jason (Spring) Kane of Rib Lake, WI., and Hannah(Taylor) Lindeman of Roseville, MN.; two great granddaughters, Adrielle and Adelynn Prom. Riley is survived by one sister, Bobbie(Russell) Anglin of Albany, GA., and one Aunt, Mildred Holley of Albany, three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hooks of Bainbridge, GA., Miriam Rollins of Blakely, GA., and Nancy Leister of Albany, GA, one brother-in-law, Harrell(Joannie) Hartley of Yuma, AZ., and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Riley, loved, and remembered them all in prayer and cards.
He was preceded in death by his great granddaughter Abigail Hartley Brannon, his parents, John R. and Mary H. George, three siblings and their spouses, Christine"Odell"(Borden) Barry of Albany, Laverne(Byron) Blackburn of Blakely, Chesley(Klara) George, and his father and mother-in-law, John Edmon and Lura Harrell Hartley of Blakely, GA.
The funeral service was held at Ranfranz & Vine funeral home in Rochester, with pastor David Schorejs, Orlando Fl., officiating. Internment was in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors.
