Darton acts fast after newly hired wrestling coach backs out of job, announces replacement Saturday

ALBANY — Former Campbellsville (Ky.) University assistant wrestling coach James Hicks will become the new head coach of the Darton State College wrestling program. Former Purdue assistant coach Tom Erickson, who was scheduled to become head of the program beginning July 1, resigned Thursday less than two weeks after accepting the job, thus reopening the search.

“We are excited to announce James Hicks as Darton State College’s next head wrestling coach,” A.D. Mike Kiefer said Saturday. “It will be great to have him as part of the Darton State College family.

“We had previously announced Tom Erikson as our head wrestling coach, but he submitted his resignation on Thursday afternoon. We were fortunate enough to have several excellent candidates during the search process and coach Hicks will take Darton wrestling to great heights.”

Hicks is a 2009 graduate of Campbellsville University, where he was a two time national qualifier. He placed in the state championship during his high school career at Glades Central High School In Florida.

“I’ve been recruiting all over the state of Georgia for the past four years while an assistant at Campbellsville University,” Hicks said. “Coaching in Georgia would be a easy transition for me.

“I’m confident that I am the guy that will elevate Darton wrestling to the level that so many Georgia wrestling fans want to see.”
