ALBANY -- The Marine Corps Logistics Command's Marine Depot Maintenance Command (MDMC) has been presented the Albany Technical College's Manufacturer of the Year award.
Col. Stephen A. Medeiros, commander of MDMC, accepted the award on behalf of the facility at a ceremony in the conference room of the MDMC.
According to Matt Trice, vice president of Economic Development Programs at Albany Technical College, MDMC had earlier been nominated for the state Manufacturer of the Year in the large industry category. The nomination came as part of the statewide Manufacturers Appreciation Week. While MDMC did not win the state competition, it was recognized as Albany Tech's Manufacturer of the Year.
"We value the partnership we have with Maintenance Center Albany," Trice said. "It's an important partnership, not only for the economic development division at the college but for the college as a whole."
According to Albany Tech sources, the college has developed diploma and degree programs in Business Logistics Management to provide employees for MDMC. In addition, the welding program was ramped up to provide MDMC workers with skills specific to retrofitting war-fighting equipment.
The mission of the Marine Depot Maintenance Command is to provide innovative worldwide maintenance repairs and technical services for ground combat, combat support and developmental projects.
Medeiros called the relationship with Albany Tech a "co-op study force", and said that during a course of study current or future MDMC employees go through a series of industrial engineering classes, after which (the students) "come back to us all trained and ready to go."
"This (award) is more than well deserved," Trice said. "We have had a relationship with MDMC for a number of years and its just gotten greater and greater. There are a number of programs that feed into jobs here at the base. We have a logistics program with students who intern while they're in school. They're full-time students while working at MDMC.
The mission of the Marine Depot Maintenance Command is to provide worldwide maintenance repairs and technical services for ground combat, combat support and developmental projects. Since February, the newly named MDMC has represented a merger of Maintenance Center Albany and Marine Corps Logistics Command's west coast maintenance facility at Barstow, Calif. According to Marine Corps sources, the consolidation saves the service $65 million over a five-year period, then $20 million each year thereafter.
