ALBANY -- Roy Lamar Staines 54, of Augusta, GA formerly of Albany, GA died at home in his sleep Friday, June 15, 2012. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at Avalon United Methodist Church. Rev. Dennis Lanning will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service. In keeping with Lamar's wishes his body has been cremated.
Lamar was a native of Albany, a 1977 graduate of Albany High School. He was raised attending Palmyra Road United Methodist Church. He served a 3 year tour with the US Navy. After his naval service, he moved his family to Tybee Island, GA where he enjoyed the beach and ocean, later moving to Savannah for several years. During this time, he attended Savannah State University for two years, later relocating to Augusta.
He was an Industrial Welder, building underground storage tanks until his retirement due to a disability. He then started volunteering at the Veteran's Hospital's Greenhouse in Augusta, working as a Nurseryman. He came to love working with and growing live plants. He was always willing to share the plants he raised at home with his friends and neighbors. He grew up loving animals, particular his many dogs.
Lamar is survived by his parents, Roy and Dot Staines of Lee County, GA, his daughter, Brandy Staines Wall, her husband, Joe, and a granddaughter, Claire Wall, all of Savannah, GA, his sister, Delora Staines Rogers of Lynn Haven, FL; and several nieces and one nephew.
A family service will be held at a later date to scatter his ashes along the South Shore of Tybee Island and the Atlantic Ocean, which was his desire.
