The name of the drowning victim released was incorrect. According to Tracey M. Hudson of the district attorney's child death team the correct name is Jermar Lamont Greene.
ALBANY, Ga. — Jersey City, N.J. resident Jermar Lamont Greene, 15, drowned in a residential pool just before 5:25 p.m. Tuesday, while visiting family in Radium Springs.
“At this time there doesn’t look like any sign of foul play,” said Dougherty County Police Detective Tamiko Whitlock. “The body has been taken to Macon for an autopsy.”
Whitlock is a member of the district attorney’s child death team, who along with teammate District Attorney Investigator Tracey Hudson is investigating the drowning.
Rescuers pulled the unresponsive Ponder from the pool behind a ranch house at 113 N. Rosewood Drive, where he had been swimming with another boy, Whitlock said.
The people at the home had been looking for Ponder for 10 minutes before they called 911, said Allen Cravey, Albany Fire department assistant chief. Emergency rescue efforts by first responders included diving into the pool with firefighting breathing gear on to search underwater.
According to Whitlock an adult at the home tried to find Ponder in the pool but failed because the water was too murky to spot the boy. Firefighter Brian Anderson and an unnamed emergency medical technician jumped in the pool with Anderson using the breathing gear and located the body.
Together with the emergency technicians, they carried the victim to the ambulance and he was rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead.
