Leesburg’s own Buster Posey, the Giants’ starting catcher who is batting .300 with 40 RBI and 10 HRs, leads the NL All-Star ballot by more than 200,000 votes with one day of voting left.
SAN FRANCISCO — Buster Posey, in his third season as the starting catcher for the San Francisco Giants, would’ve made his first MLB All-Star appearance a year ago if he hadn’t gotten hurt during a home-plate collision.
This year, however, the Leesburg native is on a collision course to be the National League starter.
Barring a rash of late votes for second-place St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, Posey, who currently leads all NL catchers with 3,335,982 votes as of Tuesday — 216,452 ahead of Molina — should wake up Friday morning and learn he’ll be the starter for the July 10 game in Kansas City when the voting closes at 11:59 p.m. today.
Posey, the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year who led the Giants to the World Series title, is having another great season, batting .300 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI. He also has an on-base percentage of .366, is slugging .483 and he helped call a perfect game thrown by Giants ace Matt Cain.
