ALBANY, Ga. — An Albany Police Department SUV collided with a Ford F-150 pickup on South Jefferson Street at Whitney Avenue and sent seven people to the hospital after 2 p.m. Saturday.

One woman was extricated from the pickup’s wreckage and five children passengers ranging from 1 to 15 years old escaped.

According to police reports, Cpl. Gary Price had his blue lights flashing on his way south on Jefferson to a call on Lee Street. The pickup was headed west on Whitney Avenue through the intersection when the SUV hit it. Preliminary reports stated that the pickup had a green light.

The impact sent the SUV spinning around while the pickup flipped until it landed upside down about 30 feet from the SUV east on Whitney.

The pickup’s driver, a 22-year-old woman was trapped in the pickup. One child may have been thrown from the pickup and the others escaped. All appeared to have injuries.

Albany Fire Department emergency personnel extricated the woman from the wreckage using a Hurst spreading tool to rip a door off.

She was taken immediately to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Dougherty County EMS treated children at the scene and also took them to Phoebe.

Price is the handler of the police K-9 Bubi. Both he and the dog were reported in good condition. No names and medical conditions for the pickup’s driver and the children were immediately available.

The area around the wrecks was taped off allowing officers to control the crime scene. Many people showed up and tried to enter the crime scene adding to the chaos emergency personnel responded to. They were ushered away. By 4 p.m. the scene was clear.

The case remains under investigation.

Strong THIS IS TO ALL THAT HAVE SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY ABOUT THE YOUNG LADY DRIVING THE TRUCK IN THE ACCIDENT THAT HAPPENED. IT WAS NOT HER FAULT, SHE HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY. THE OFFICER DIDN'T HAVE HIS LIGHTS OR SIREN ON. THIS IS @ BIGBOB, IF IT WAS YOUR FAMILY HOW WOULD YOU FEEL THEN. 1 OF THE CHILDREN IN THE TRUCK WAS MY GRANDSON.

It was her fault if those babies were not car seats or seat belts. But never mind, they will all be rich in a few weeks.

My comment must read wrong because i'm on the young ladys side. The cops have to stop at red lioghts & proceed with caution.

I WISH THE ALBANY HERALD AND WALB WOULD GET THE STORY RIGHT THERE WAS ONLY 4 CHILDREN IN THE TRUCK AND ACCORDING THE WITNESSES THE OFFICER DIDN'T HAVE HIS LIGHTS OR SIREN.

Cpl. Gary Price is the same officer that was in the high speed car chase that killed the young man in Lee County on Old Leesburg Rd. & also another high speed chase on Newton Rd when he hit a car. When is this man going to taken off the road before he kills another person??? Another law-suit will be settled....

I hope everyone involved in the accident is ok. Hopefully there were witnesses to the accident. The officer should not have gone through the intersection without using extreme caution. The report says he had his lights flashing, but he should have also had his sirens going as well. My concern is 5 kids in a F-150. Were there enough seatbelts for each passenger and were they wearing their seatbelts? I would like to know why everyone assumes people are going to "sue" at the drop of a hat?

Question? Why was this allowed to be videoed? All but one of the victims was a minor, to me this is very bad on WALB's part.

If the police officer had his siren going as well as his lights, a driver would be required to stop regardless whether they had the green light or not. Police and emergency vehicles have the right of way, but if he didn't have his siren going, she would not know that vehicle was passing through until the last minute, which appears to be what happened here. Even if he had his lights flashing and siren going, he still should proceed cautiously through each intersection. I've witnessed some officers, firetrucks and ambulances doing just that, they would slow down at each intersection to make sure the way was clear and not just zooming through. I kinow they need to answer calls, but safety should come first. If you kill somebody while in pursuit because you wasn't being safe, that victim doesn't get a second chance from that officers mistake. Luckily no one got killed in this wreck.

Its ok she can use my tax money to sue the city of Albany and I pray to God if this officer was in the wrong, she does just that! These no good officers and investigators (not all of them, but MOST) act as if they are above the law and don't have to abide by the same rules as citizens. I agree with the other commenter, he should have been given a desk job a long time ago. I hate Albany, mostly poor people on welfare with 7 children looking for handouts. Reputable citizens better wise up and move on somewhere else. Lord knows when I finish school at a local college, I'm outta here!! Bottom line police, JUDGES, lawyers can do no wrong and hard working, tax paying citizens foot the bill for everyone else's stupidity but I don't mind paying for this young lady's lawsuit lol. The city deserves their a** handed to them on a silver platter.
