Mardi Gras fest moves to March 10

Likelihood of severe weather is the catalyst for the decision, officials say.

ALBANY, Ga. — Officials say that the Mardi Gras Street Festival has been postponed until Saturday, March 10. “We have a responsibility to the vendors and public safety concerns. We’re concerned about the wind that could be here this weekend,” organizer Phil Cannon said. Cannon said that one benefit of moving the street festival is that the event will now coincide with two other concerts planned for downtown. Keith Sweat and the Manhattans are slated for the Civic Center that night and Cory Smith is scheduled to be at the State Theatre.

Also postponed until the 10th is the Flint RiverQuarium’s Turtle Race.

The Albany Marathon and Half-Marathon, the SB&T Bike Race — both on Saturday — and the Sounds of Praise events are still planned to go on as scheduled this weekend, Welcome Center Manager Teresa Smith said. If the road race is canceled, it will be a last-minute decision.

“The decision on canceling the marathon won’t be until 6 a.m. on the day of the event,” Smith said.

The marathon for wheelchair and crank chair participants is scheduled to start at 6:45 a.m. Saturday. The marathon and half-marathon for all other participants begins at 7 a.m.

More than 1,600 people have registered to run in the marathon, and bicyclists from around the world will be in Albany to participate in the bike race, which is Saturday and Sunday.

Each year, between 30,000 and 50,000 people flock downtown for the two-day event that has become known as the Rock, Roll and Run Weekend.

I do think that public safety is best so moving it is probably a good thing, but how is it a benefit if those other two things are going on at the same time? People can't be in three places at one time...

Not going on at the same time.. Running starts at 6:45AM and the other festivities require the vendors to start setting up on Friday night.. And with the potential for the worst weathe in the early afternoon and evening not a good time to have a stage and vendor tents blowing around.. You don't play with Mother Nature.. She can be one mean 'lady'..

If it Does Not matter to you then PLEASE stay at home. The children of Albany do not need to see a grumpy old man being such a sour puss.

I guess any money brought in or lost wouldn't matter either eh coach?

What's in a name anyways.. Does it really matter? The people who get out and support it are there for the family time, entertainment, food, etc.. So if the name is the problem, just stay home you would not enjoy it no matter what they called it.

A crank chair is a handicap wheelchair that has a bicycle pedal device that the user 'cranks' with their arms. The other handicap wheelchairs are pedaled.. someone who doesn't have use of their legs uses a crank chair.. It is so inspirational watching them compete.. They are Awesome..

It's a special wheelchair with a hand crank, for disabled to be able to participate. More comfortable than pushrim wheelchairs for racing.

i think, but am not sure, that it's another vehicle for paralyzed indiviuals. they sit low to the ground and there's a "crank", almost like bicycle pedals, that they use their arms to turn. kinda like a bike, but sitting low and pedaling with your arms. just a guess, but i think it's a good one.

Your guess is absolutely correct! And you would be amazed at how fast they can go.

You don't have to be in three places at once. The Bike Race is going on on block over from the Marathon, so you can cheer on the cyclist for a while then walk over and cheer on the marathoners.

Crank Chairs are used by our wheel chair athletes.

I meant 3 places at one time on the 10th... Mardi Gras, the concert at the civic center and the other concert. And I am sure not everyone will go to it all, but the article just said that it was a benefit b/c it coincided with that stuff.. just curious was all.

It is a shame it couldn't be moved inside that big empty Civic Center down the street for this weekend!

They got WWE Rasslin Saturday at the Civic Center so that would be a negative on that.

A Crank chair is a chair mostly used in competition that is motorized by a crank of some sort that is pushed by your hands, not feet. Some have pedals adapted with hand grips, some have other designs. They are NOT the normal wheelchair that you move by pushing the circle ring attached to the wheels on each side. Many crank chairs are 3 wheeled, some 4.

There is another type called the "cranky" chair. That's any chair my wife sits in.
