BLAKELY -- Mrs. Martha Jean Jordan, 77, died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Al. Her funeral service will be held Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 3 PM in the New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Sterling Jones and Rev. Matt Bonnette officiating. Special words will be given by Mrs. Jo Bush and Mrs. Eunice Waller and Amy Ferry will sing songs that are special to the family. Burial will follow in the Pine Lawn Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends starting at 1:30 P. M. in the church social hall up until 2:45 PM. The active pallbearers will be Phil Clenney, Emmett Mock, Tyner Cooper, Mike Widener, Ray Jordan, Sterling Davis, Jason Williams and Hal Waller. Honorary pallbearers will be her Sunday School Class, plus James Griffin, Stacey Cooper, Leonard Bridges, George Lawson, Bobby Tiner, Doyle Foster, Charles Bush, Frank Taylor, Max Jones, Roy Stuart, Max Evans, Bruce Wilson, Jerry Harrell and William "PeeWee" Croft.

Mrs. Jordan was born in Early County on June 30, 1934 to the late J T Cannon and Martha Irene Waller Cannon. She graduated from Damascus High School and Georgia Southern College, where she received her BS degree in Education. She taught school for the Early County School System for 7 1/2 years before becoming a Charter Teacher at Southwest Georgia Academy in 1970. She taught 30 years and retired from SGA in 2000. In her years at SGA she was recognized several times for her dedication: Star Teacher, Yearbook Dedication in 1979 and the hall in her building was named in her honor. Along with those honors, she was Jr. Beta Club Sponsor and was known for her excellent Georgia History Presentations and Scrapbook assignments.

Following her retirement, she dedicated herself to her family, walking with her close friends and giving encouragement to anyone with a special occasion or illness. She was known in her Church and Community as " The Card Lady." Mrs. Jordan was a lifetime member of New Hope Baptist church, where she was a dedicated member. She taught Young Adult Sunday School Class for many years and served on numerous committees and was always available to serve in any way.

Her survivors include her husband, Melvin V. "Buddy" Jordan of Blakely, Ga.; 2 daughters: Peggy Jeanine Bernstein of Alpharetta, Ga. and Penny Lorilei Riddley of Saint Marys, Ga. She has 1 son; David Cannon Jordan of Gainesville, Ga. There is 1 brother: David Cannon and his wife Nell of Blakely, Ga. Other survivors include 4 grandchildren: Trey Riddley and Brittney R. Jones and her husband Tim all of Saint Marys, Ga., Jessica Jordan and Rachel Jordan of Lilburn, Ga. There are 3 great grandchildren: Ashley Riddley, Drew Riddley and Kingsley Jones all of Saint Marys, Ga. and her "Special Walking Friends."

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either New Hope Baptist Church, 3832 Hwy 27, Blakely, Ga. 39823 or to Southwest Georgia Academy, 14105 Hwy 200, Damascus, Ga. 39841.
