Company to provide 200 jobs in Albany

ALBANY — An Albany Internet service provider and call center is expanding its operations and creating 200 jobs, the company said Friday.

According to a news release, Teleperformance, a global provider of outsourced contact center services managing customer care and technical support programs, has begun accepting applications to fill the 200 sales and customer service representative positions at its Albany center.

Training classes have already started and will continue through the end of August.

“We’re thrilled that Teleperformance will create 200 new jobs as it takes advantage of Albany-Dougherty County’s available work force and its telecommunications infrastructure, which makes it an ideal location for sales and customer service operations,” Ted Clem, president of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission, said.

The EDC worked with Teleperformance in obtaining training and assistance with partners including Albany Technical College, Georgia Quick Start and the Georgia Department of Labor, Clem said.

The news comes on the heels of word from Washington that the economy added 227,000 new jobs in February, one of the strongest monthly surges since the start of the recession.

Locally, according to the Georgia Department of Labor, the five-county metro Albany area lost 1,700 jobs from January 2011 to January 2012. New unemployment claims for that same period year-to-year, however, have dropped 13.7 percent from 1,369 in January 2011 to 1,182.

Do you have to have a foreign accent to get these jobs? Or perhaps the better question is do you have to know anything technical to get a technical job? I hope this means some of our off shore jobs are returning to on shore people--and will stay in Albany for a while.

The first thing that popped into my head when I went to the web page and read about the company was the famous Peggy ad on TV....you know, the one where the lady tries to call and redeem some points she has accumulated and gets customer service off in Siberia someplace and talks to the guy with the heavy accent. My ISP is with a satellite company because I am so rural. It is either the small dish for internet or dial up and my customer service is outsourced to India. I have become so frustrated with them that I demanded the booklet the customer service reps use and do my own troubleshooting. When we had trouble with coordinates my husband reset them and I demanded 2 months free service because they did not send a repairman out here in a timely manner. Once my husband fixed a cable running underground from the satellite to the modem and once again I demanded 2 months free service and got it. If they give them the booklet it will be a breeze to do the job and according to the information on the web page they will give them extensive training. Let's just hope the ones who apply can READ and WRITE. I hope the jobs will stay in Albany hope the citizens will appreciate the fact that even tho they will most likely start at or near minimum wage, at least it is honest work and is a start. Please be thankful you at least have an opportunity to work. And no, this is not a political statement....I am truly glad to see the opportunity for at least 200+ to be gainfully employed and hope you can prove to the company that you can do the job they want you to do. Places like this have opened in other towns like Albany and were unable to stay open because they were not able to find enough people to meet the qualifications of simply being able to read and write and comprehend the task at hand.

Now that made me smile…. a room full of “Peggys.” But seriously in the last year we have had close to a hundred applicants here in Albany turned down by our home office because they cannot annunciate simple words. They may talk to locals like that but they will never make it out of Albany butchering the English language. What are they teaching in the High Schools and Colleges here?

Well AlbPieMaster...I was trying to make a point but trying to be nice about it....thank you so much for picking up on it and making it obvious. As far as schools go, thankfully my children never went locally. I do hope this call center works out for the area.

MANY OF THE SCHOOL TEACHERS SPEAK WITH THE SAME ATROCIOUS ACCENT. IT'S LIKE CONVERSATING WITH A MORON WHO HAS A SPEECH IMPEDIMENT.

To know one of Coach and crew found you dropped one letter in all of your typing. That is the thanks you get for being nice to a Bubba “of the Coach Crew” the other day when you said we don't count misspelling here, because at some time everyone does. Does that knife hurt your back? See even a knife at a gun fight gets lucky. That is ok he just proved trying hard enough and long enough even a blind PIG will find an acorn. But wait "The crew" still hasn't made that "intellectual" reply yet...

The reason so many are unable to make it out of Albany is they speak ebonics or have faux accents. People chew their words and you are unable to understand them. It is not difficult to open your mouth when you talk, but leave the word chewing and atrocious accents at home.

Still almost 3 days and no Coach. He has been busy with his childish name calling and promoting his blue pills and as one of his followers said

“He is too funny. He needs to be a comic”.

Yet when the subject got serious he is nowhere to be found. I await his intellectual commits and not just more of his silly name calling and childish attaches. Please Coach cut the BS and make some serious commits HERE.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the three mediocre musketeers are missing. They feel they have WON and their dreams of mediocrity have been fulfilled. So Now I’m guessing they have no need to rail against those who had desired Quality.
