Dillard’s successfully hosts ‘Fit for the Cure’

ALBANY — With the fight against breast cancer continuing, a few department store customers recently took part in an effort to help eliminate the disease.

Dillard’s at the Albany Mall participated in a campaign last week to help fight breast cancer, which by all accounts proved successful.

The store held a “Fit for the Cure” event on Tuesday. On that day, women were invited to come to be fitted for a Wacoal bra by one the company’s specialists. For every woman who participated, Wacoal donated $2 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

Dillard’s has been partnering with the company for 12 years, and these events are generally conducted twice a year.

“Women need education and to be willing to find out about cancer,” said Amanda Smith, assistant store manager at the Albany Dillard’s. “(Fit for the Cure) can make a woman feel good and make her look great.

“It is educational all around.”

In the fall, officials said the Dillard’s store chain raised $1 million for the cause. For its most recent efforts, the Albany store hoped to contribute $500.

Within a few minutes into the event, officials at the Albany store said there were 35 appointments set for the day. By that time, $208 had been accounted for.

When all was said and done, $1,053 was donated to the effort through the money that came into the Albany store Tuesday.

This year, Wacoal pledged to make a minimum donation of $250,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. To date, Wacoal has donated more than $2.7 million to the organization, the company’s website states.

The National Cancer Institute’s website estimates new cases of breast cancer in 226,870 women and 2,190 men this year. At the same time, it also predicts breast cancer deaths for 39,510 women and 410 men.

This is a worthy cause. Thank you Dillard's for caring and participating. It is important that women are made to feel good about themselves and educated enough about the importance of checking oneself and having annual mammograms.
