Tifton Hospital Authority buys Adel hospital/nursing home

The authority purchased the hospital for $8.35 million, officials say.

TIFTON -- The entity that owns and controls the assets of Tift Regional Medical Center announced Monday that it had purchased the hospital and nursing home in the rural town of Adel, officials say.

The Hospital Authority of Tift County voted to purchase Memorial Hospital of Adel, its affiliate nursing home and ancillary assets for $8.35 million, with the new hospital to be managed by the principals at Tift Regional Medical Center.

"With input from our board of trustees and medical staff physicians, this acquisition is part of an overall strategic development initiative," said William T. Richardson, TRMC president/CEO. "Only 50 percent of our patients come from Tift County; the other 50 percent come from our surrounding communities, with Cook County playing a significant role. We look forward to capitalizing on the great care already provided by Memorial and continuing the strong relationships with the local physicians and community."

The 60-bed acute care facility in Adel employs roughly 250 people.

Tift Regional, on the other hand, is a 1,700-employee not-for-profit hospital in Tifton whose assets are owned and controlled by the Hospital Authority of Tift County.

Word of the purchase comes after Tift Regional announced last week that it was slashing $14 million out of its budget, which included laying off 40 people, in a cost-reduction strategy "designed to meet challenges in future health care delivery."

Actually, it's just a matter of time before Phoebe buys both Tift Regional & Adel Hospital. Phoebe has taken over Albany and Americus, next goal is to take over all of Southwest Ga.
