Squawk of the day - March 16, 2012

"Drivers of Albany, a red light means stop. A green light means go. And, if you see an accident happen at a traffic light, please take one minute out of your busy day to be a witness, don’t just drive away. You may need someone to witness an accident for you one day."

Also blinkers are a nice little tool to use. Turn the blinker on before you apply the brake, please, so as to alert the car behind you that you are about to slow down.

From the Georgia Driver's Manual pages 43 and 44: Turn Signals and Making Turns Safely Turn movements by motor vehicles are regulated by law, and failure to observe or comply is a violation. Drivers must know and understand the law in order to turn safely and avoid accidents. A turn signal must be given whenever a turn is made to the right or the left. You must give a continuous turn signal for an adequate distance to alert other drivers before turning. Never decide to make a turn at the “last minute.” Turning quickly or erratically can be dangerous to you and other drivers. How To Make A Right Turn Using appropriate signals, and giving drivers ahead of and behind you adequate notice, indicate a right turn. Approach the intersection in the right lane, staying as close as practicable to the curb or edge of the roadway. If there is a bicycle lane on the road on which you are traveling, you must yield to bicyclists traveling straight through the intersection before making a right turn. Make the turn in such a way as to end up in the right lane of the street into which you have turned and avoid entering any other lane of traffic. If there are multiple turning lanes on the street you are turning from, complete the turn so that your vehicle ends up in the corresponding lane on the street you are turning onto. How To Make A Left Turn Using appropriate signals, and giving drivers ahead of and behind you adequate notice, activate your left turn signal. Move into the far left lane of the direction in which you are traveling, or into the turning lane if one is provided. Keep your wheels straight until you begin making the turn. Yield the right-of-way to all vehicles, including bicycles, which are approaching from the opposite direction or pedestrians crossing either roadway. When safe to do so, and when traffic signals/signs permit, make your turn so that your vehicle ends up in the lane closest to the center lanes(s) in your direction of traffic on the street you turned onto. If there are multiple turning lanes on the street you are turning from, complete the turn so that your vehicle ends up in the corresponding lane on the street you are turning onto. Once you have entered an intersection to make a left turn, you cannot change lanes in the intersection. You must stop and remain stopped for any pedestrians in the crosswalk of the road you are turning onto until they have cleared the lanes of traffic that you are traveling on.

The other day I made a left turn hogger stop in the middle of traffic. He knew if he hit me he would be charged. Scared his wife to death. This is a good way to scare them to death and he was not going fast. But this is typical behavior in Albany. Another action of thumbing the laws of the land in the face. They have no respect for authority and we wonder why our schools are in trouble. No respect in schools produces no respect as adults. Billy Graham's daughter said we are producing a conscienceless society.

My husband used to do this all the time to left lane hoggers that wouldnt move over and they would tap their brake lights to get him off their tail.

chinaberry25 While I agree with what you did, there is something you may not know. If the car had hit you, YOU could have faced a possible charge of road rage. Be careful doing things like that--it may bite you in the butt

Please define the left turn hogger for me. I have never heard that terminology. ;) ;) I agree with you Lulu. And, those who fly like a bat out of a fire in the left lane to cut you off in the right lane to turn right. This ALWAYS happens on South Slappey with people going to McDonalds, so I have started staying in the left lane until I get to the post office!!!!

I agree with LuLu ans Sister Ruby, accidents can be prevented. Keep your eyes open!

there's no such things as accidents. it's someones willful neglect to follow the laws (or use common sense).

I've lived in several other sections of the country, and without a doubt, Albany has the rudest drivers you will find anywhere. If "road rage" were indeed a violation, the courts would be full of offenders. A few drivers will offer to help you out into the traffic when they see you are in a difficult position, and I do appreciate them.

Some drivers are smart A$$es, They will turn their right blinker on then turn left or vice versa, either that or they don't know the proper function of the turn signal.

Did a survey years ago on drivers that leaned over to passenger side of the car while driving. They didn't know the rearview mirror was adjustable. Now I like the ones that push the front seat all the way back and lean back so they can look out the rear side window while driving. I'm really am impressed with these fine American citizens. As far as the ones that drive in the left lane while, texting/talking it keeps them "safe" from running into someone ahead of them. Trust me, the APD are very vigalante on keeping our roads safe from careless drivers. And last but not least: MY HERO's - the ones that can drive in rain or darkness without headlights. You got to be brave to do that.

Off-topic a little, but I did my own survey once. Quite frequently I spend my lunch hour sitting under a shade tree behind McDonald's at the mall, and am floored at the number of drivers who enter McDonald's through the exit. This thoroughly pisses me off, as they're trying to be slick and cut in the drive-through line before those who drive around and enter correctly. So one day I decided to stay there for an entire hour and do a count. In one hour, there were 26 exit-enterers. I would post the demographics of my findings, but I would get called names for doing so.

The normal count is 8 out of ten are ..... and 8 out of ten them are females. Just saying.

LuLu 2 years, 7 months ago

And the survey saaays.... You are correct! Ding ding ding!!!

0

Shinedownfan 2 years, 7 months ago

I tried to do my own survey once, how many drivers were on their cell phone, men AND women were guilty, guilty, guilty! You can't count them all there r so many!

What about the driver that stops in traffic to let some one enter the roadway, while being considerate to ONE driver and inconsiderate to dozens of drivers? Some drivers need a refresher course on what yield means too.

I was thinking of squawking about Albany drivers this morning...Is there a written memo that driving in Albany requires you to ignore the rules or become a bad driver?

Please folks, use blinkers. I am sure your cars came with them when you bought them. Sometimes, those who pay the most for their cars, are the worst about not using them. Does paying that much for a car make you exempt, or are the cars so fancy you can't find them?

Please use lights in the rain or fog... a white or silver car is almost invisible in those conditions. You can't completely rely on your automatic lights for every condition. Sometime you have to actually use your hand to turn them on.

Please use lanes correctly. Turn lanes were put there to be used. And don't wait until the last 3 ft. to get over, they are designed so that the person behind you doesn't have to slam on brakes for you to get in it. And once you decide to get into the turn lane, commit to it. If you aren't sure you want to turn, you can always wait until everyone passes, and get back out. Don't drive half-way in and half-way out all the way to the turn or light. And if you are going to drive below the speed limit, for God's sake stay out of the left lane of multi-lane streets! And don't use the left lane as your personal drag strip.

If you pull up behind someone who has stopped, and you can't see where their tires meet the road, from over your hood...you are too close and are guaranteed to hit them if someone rear-ends you. There is nothing worse than looking in the rear-view mirror, and being able to see the nose hairs of the driver behind you!

And last of all, please don't drive like you are the only person on the road. You are not the only person trying to go from point A to point B. If you are in that big of a hurry, you should have left yesterday...because no matter how fast you drive you are still going to be late! And I don't know how many times I have been almost hit by someone turning a corner, or left onto a street, because they don't stay in their lanes.

Amen to the lights on in the rain or fog. Don't count on the sentinel lights to automatically come on... cause they don't! I pulled out in front of a silver van this morning who did not have their lights on. The sun had not yet risen. Come-on people, a little courtesy!

0

tywebb 2 years, 7 months ago

hellbanys new motto: No courtesy, No common sense! Drive at your own risk!

0

VSU 2 years, 7 months ago

Some drivers don't have their lights on driving at night, so do doubt they would not hesitate driving in the rain with no lights.

One of my personal favorites is the driver that's "blind to the behind" meaning you pull up behind them and you cannot see their face in either of the three mirrors on the left, right, and windshield mirrors. How can you drive like that??

0

VietVet1 2 years, 7 months ago

That goes back to my survey - "didn't know mirrors are adjustable".

Idea

Maybe The Herald could start a weekly feature and publish pages from the Georgia Driver's Manual to refresh people minds about driving laws. Sure could not hurt.

Slower traffic belongs in the right lane. If you are going slower, PLEASE stay out of the left lane. If you want to hang in the left lane with me, push the right pedal down. It's called the accelerator.

Sister_Ruby 2 years, 7 months ago

That horn y'all hear when you make a turn in front of me with no signal.......well that's me saying "you's just a lazy-ass fool driving a car around my town".
