In continuous dedication to all the beautiful girls, young ladies, and young women in our communities ...
Shower yourselves with endless affirmations of your greatness. Adorn yourselves with sophistication and grace. Put on garments of knowledge and self-worth. Place your feet inside shoes of professionalism and independence. Spray on the fragrance of self-love and inner beauty.
Make your faces up with the foundation of strength and the mascara of courage. When self-doubt or negativity comes to pay you a visit, make them look you in the face where your courage to recognize them and your strength to replace them resides.
Look into the mirror of truth that embraces your flaws and give thanks for your perfect imperfections.
Speak words of substance and of life. Let them form a conversation that propels dreams and dispels the myths. Make friends with maturity and responsibility. Use your ears to listen to wisdom and your hands to hold onto it.
See with your hearts and be blind to nothing. Polish your nails with the color of creativity and use your fingers to ignite possibilities. Turn the pages of a book on a subject you know nothing about, dial the number to a school to better yourself, point to the future that can belong to you.
Look within and take inventory. Protect your goods. Guard them with discernment. Give them with certainty. Never have sales, clearances, or discounts. You were wonderfully and purposefully stocked and there is no price for the invaluable.
You can be robbed, ransacked, and broken if you leave doors unlocked or windows open. If you have had this experience, then you need to report the missing goods to the authority and await restoration.
Carry a bag of common sense; let it not cost more than you can afford to keep in it. Let it not be the price you paid to feel superior. Let it not be the label to which your identity is attached.
Write yourselves a blank check to love yourselves sufficiently. Make self-sufficiency your ring tone and answer the call to take that step forward.
Speak words that empower your sister because in so doing, you empower yourselves. Walk with a sense of purpose even if you are still searching for what it is. Your purpose may be to demonstrate the walk.
Know that your beauty is beyond the exterior smoothness of your skin, the shape of your figure, the style of your hair, or the clothes that you wear. Do not attach your sense of self to these changing trivialities. Be young women of character, of intellect, of respect, of courage, of wisdom, of faith. Be phenomenal.
In the words of Dr. Maya Angelou:
Now you understand just why my head’s not bowed. I don’t shout or jump about, or have to talk real loud. When you see me passing, it ought to make you proud.
I say it’s in the click of my heels, the bend of my hair, the palm of my hand, the need for my care.
‘Cause I’m a woman. Phenomenally. Phenomenal woman...
That’s you and you ... and me.
