KATHLEEN, Ga. -- After winning the Region 1-AAA championship less than two weeks ago, Westover Comprehensive High School’s literary team put together a total team effort to win the GHSA State Class AAA team championship at Veterans High School.

The championship marked the first literary team title in school history. Senior Max Moye claimed an individual state title after receiving a perfect score in the Boys Essay.

“This feat is outstanding. To win a state championship is the culmination of hard work, talent and execution,” said an excited Westover Principal William Chunn. “I congratulate our coaches, Mrs. (Polly) Stadnik, Mrs. (Selena) Bentley and our team on a job well done. Our team defeated some of the state’s best private schools, magnet schools and public schools to win this championship.”

Chunn added that the victory reflected well on the school and the Dougherty County School System as a whole.

"I appreciate the positive representation this team has brought to Westover High School, the Dougherty County School System and to all of Southwest Georgia," Chunn said. "To have a team from Southwest Georgia defeat the metro Atlanta area is awesome!"

An outstanding accomplishment for the children. I was offended at Chunn's negative political remarks about private schools and magnet schools. Show me your Union card, Chunn.

Offended at what? He respects the other schools enough to brag about beating them. Isn't that the highest form of respect?

The first two sentences in the quote are perfect. The third is political and insulting. He should have stopped at congratulating the kids and the teachers. When you are "Champion" well it means you beat everybody else. Why take political pot shots at particular kinds of schools? It's something Obama would do and it's insulting.

I am one of the hardest critics of the DCSS, but would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Westover team on its accomplishment. We are proud of you!

Congratulations to these students & teachers for an outstanding job. They show what can be accomplished in our schools if you put your mind to it. There is an excellent education to be had in the DCSS if you are smart enough to take advantage of what is offered. Unfortunately, too many in this town use the schools as a free babysitter for their kids instead of sending them to school for an education.

Excellent Job!!! Go Westover High School!!! You deserve much praise for your great accomplishments. Congrats on whipping up on those preppy schools and showing the haters that the DCSS has great teachers and students despite what this newspaper and the writer of this story says about you. YOU ARE STATE CHAMPIONS!!! BETTER THAN ALL THE PREPPY SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, PUBLIC SCHOOLS, and ALL THE REST IN THE STATE who came in your way. YOU ARE THE CHAMPS, and you have the trophy to prove it. You matter how much hate you see after my post, just know you are the best in the state, and as my favorite wrestler (THE ROCK) would say ........."IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THEY THINK!!!!"

Coach welcome back: First I agree with you this is a very High Honor for all those who participated, Students and Teachers. Sadly I see your week off did not improve your lust to spew hate talk. I have always said there are many GREAT teachers in DCSS and only a few who are low life liars and cheaters who work to steal the children’s future and not build the children’s future as these Teachers worked hard to do, in fact they worked so hard they lead the students to be the Best of the Best in all of Georgia. While you have tried repeatedly to claim that in “your opinion” I must “Hate” all DCSS teachers because I speak out to remove the lowest of low teachers. Sir this is a good example of what I have been calling for, excellent teachers who can motivate and lead our children to a higher level of learning. I still believe it cost no more to have all excellent teachers leading our children to the Future than it does to keep the lying cheating teachers who only care about themselves no matter what they steal from our children’s Futures. Bad, poor quality teachers are like weeds, left unattended they slowly infect the rest of the field, dig them out and we could have four High Schools completing at state level. Please stop defending the destroyers of futures and start demanding to have more teachers like these who are the builders of Futures

It's LITERARY.......but hey a little miss don't matter much around here. And we can agree that there are SOME great kids and SOME great teachers in the DCSS.

Hey Westover kids.....ignore the B.S you see after my earlier post, its your time to shine....CONGRATS TO YOU AGAIN!!! Remember you are still in SW Georgia and SOME people around want you to fail so they can continue to ridicule your school system. This story is a perfect example to destroy their view of you. People connected to the DCSS knew you were smart, and we knew you had great teachers all the time. This paper prefers bad news about the DCSS, and not the good news. Some of the bloggers on here are the same way. So, ignore them and keep up the good work.

Coach please explain what BS you saw above. No one has said they want kids to fail. You made that up. We have said there are kids failing because DCSS does not have more teachers like the ones honored in this story. You say we don't need better teachers and leadership, what we have is just fine in your opinion and you will keep voting for them to prove it. We have said if DCSS would strive for more teachers like these we could have more students like these. So just where is the BS?

It could be if were not for the race baiters like coach. He never misses an opportunity to make very issue a racial one.

coachjohnson42 2 years ago

I never mentioned race JACOB!!! You just have it on your mind. Are you feeling guilty???Well, you should.....I knew my praise of this great accomplishment would bring out the scum and their whining.... .....Blacks and Whites worked together at WHS and WON a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP not in athletics....(over the PREPPY SCHOOLS I might add) ...and you guys cant stand it....while I am gloating!!! See, deep down, people like Abytaxpayer is boiling mad, CJ_fan is sick, Ruby Tuesday is calling Rush Limbaugh for answers, Tywebb is just confused, and Jacob is Jealous.....Meanwhile, THE COACH STRIKES GOLD AND WINS AGAIN!!!! hahahahahahahahahaha!!! THE KING IS BACK!!!

Coach …Sorry I am not psychic like you just claimed to be and unlike you I am not able to know just what people are really thinking. So again I ask please explain to us non-psychics where you know the BS is above.

I must apologize to you the sweat you see poring off of me is not from boiling it is from laughing so hard on the inside while trying to keep a straight face in the “King’s” presence.

Truly I am so glad for you, that you have found a Kingdom to call your own. But I would caution you that gold you are so proud of is Pyrite, but then again you wouldn’t know the difference, so never mind and enjoy that wonderful world in your own head.
