DCPD seizes 20 pit bulls

ALBANY, Ga. — A phone call led Dougherty police to a trailer park Tuesday morning where a resident was keeping 20 pit bulls chained in his yard, a Dougherty County Police spokeswoman said.

“One man with 20 pit bulls would suggest he was using them in fights,” said county police Detective Tamiko Whitlock. “They did not look to be malnourished, but appeared to have been in a fight. Three of the dogs were severely injured and appeared to have been fighting.”

Whitlock emphasized the word “severely” and disclosed the trailer park’s location. The dogs were found around 11:30 a.m. in the Kersh Mobile Home Park Lot No. 6, 3223 Sylvester Road, Whitlock said. The dogs were tied in the yard with chains weighing at least 50 pounds each, she added.

“None of the dogs weighed as much as 50 pounds,” Whitlock said. “Charges are pending. We are not releasing the suspect’s name at this time.”

Following procedure in the continuing investigation, the dogs were each photographed, weighed and taken to a veterinarian to be checked. Next, they were taken to the Humane Society of Albany for shelter. No further information was immediately available.

Kind of confusing. Was the "dog fight" an illegal fight with betting or was it a group of neighborhood dogs duking it out to be the alpha dog?. If it was an illegal fight, did we round up any owners?

With 20 dogs chained in the same yard, I am sure they were fight amongst themselves, also. They mentioned a suspect, but are not naming the person as of yet..

I know! No mention if anybody was involved, but I guess they are waiting until more info is available.

My gosh, we are up to 20 now so, VSU, it sounds like it was illegal, We are rounding up the dogs by the truckload but perhaps no one knows the owners, eh?

Sounds like it is, but they still left out details as to who owned the dogs, but with that many dogs, you know he didn't have them because he is a dog lover. Guess we'll know more later.

I'm thinking it took a lot of food stamps to feed that many dogs.

WOW! And how long have these 20 dogs been chained in that yard? I hope the owner/owners get a very harsh penalty ($$$$). That is just ridiculous!!!

Taking bets on if these dogs were up-to-date on all their shots.

My heart goes out to those poor dogs. I don't care what kind of breed they are, no dog deserves that kind of treatment PERIOD.
