HOPEFUL — Each year members of the Hopeful Volunteer Fire Department gather one Saturday to enjoy a fun-filled day of barbecue cooking — and raise funds for their firefighting efforts.
Those volunteers say this year’s event on Saturday at 2707 River Road, is shaping up to be the best yet in the five years it has been conducted.
Barbecue cook-off teams from across the region compete for cash prizes in the categories of pork ribs, Boston butts and chicken. Prizes are awarded to the winners on each of the categories including $300 for the first-place team.
Judges also select a People’s Choice winner among the cooking teams. The entry fee for each team is $100.
The cooking teams can participate in the steak category this year for an additional $50 fee. Meat will be provided for the steak category. A prize of $200 goes to the winning team in the steak category.
Members of the Hopeful Volunteer Fire Department will be cooking the day of the event and pre-selling tickets for a grilled chicken plate. Tickets are $7 each and include grilled chicken and all the trimmings. Tickets may be picked up between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Organizers will also offer a Sweet Tooth Booth during the day offering homemade goodies made by cooks in the Hopeful community.
Tickets for the chicken plates may be purchased from any member of the Hopeful Volunteer Fire Department or at the Hopeful General Store. Anyone wishing to donate sweets for the Sweet Tooth Booth should contact Angie Shirah at (229) 294-4186.
Various activities are planned for children on the day of the cookoff. Information on the activities can be obtained from Lanier Worsham at (229) 328-7221.
Anyone who is not able to attend the event on Saturday and who wants to support the fire department financially can send a check to Fire Chief Ralph Davis, 2707 River Road, Camilla, Ga. 31730.
