MONDAY'S PREP ROUNDUP: Hatcher leads Lee County past Tift County

TIFTON — Matt Hatcher pitched the game of his life Monday.

Lee County’s freshman pitcher relieved Brent Kyzar in the third inning against Tift County and threw the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits to lead Lee County to a 2-1 win in his first varsity appearance.

Jess Posey and Mark Fowler were each 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Trojans (6-4), who play again today at home against Bainbridge.

BACONTON 12, MONROE 2: Baconton-Charter’s William Sullivan pitched a complete, five-inning game and struck out nine Tornadoes to improve to 5-0 on the mound.

Zack Jones went 2-for-2 and led Baconton at the plate with five RBI, and B.J. Classon and Alex Carden each went 2-for-3.

Baconton (8-3) plays again today at Pelham.

FITZGERALD 8, WORTH 5: Chance Mitchell was 2-for-3 with two runs for Worth County, who lost Monday’s back-and-forth game.

Picking up RBI for Worth County were Corey Odum, Marlin Hall and Kevin Smith.


Tennis

ALBANY — The Deerfield girls (9-0) beat Southland, 6-0. Winners for the Lady Knights were Joyner Tyson, Caroline Holley, Ansley Arrington and Katerina Mathes at singles and doubles teams of Lucy Kelley/Hope Kitchen and Paige Hawke/Amy Rao.

The Southland boys beat Deerfield, 3-2.

Deerfield (8-1) winners were Will Calhoun, Robert Newsome and Reid Wright, and Southland winners were Sachin Kothari, Micha Whittaker, Matt Ledger and Alex Arnold.

WESTOVER, AMERICUS SPLIT: The Westover girls defeated Americus-Sumter, 3-2, and the Americus Boys won, 5-0, on Monday.

Winners for the Westover girls were Savannah Boysen, Rachel Clenney and Meera Kuntawala; while Kia Blackmon/Maggie Perez and Ciara James/Sara Westra were winners for Americus.

The Americus boys got wins from reigning Herald Player of the Year Joel Landis, David Cowan, Brandon Roberts, Kendrick Mercer/Kentorell Mercer and Colton Taunton/Justin Wells.


Soccer

ALBANY — Kylee Harrod scored two goals to lead Sherwood to a 3-2 win against Terrell Academy.

Hannah King also scored for the Lady Eagles, who improved to 10-3 and will play Deerfield at 7 p.m. Thursday immediately after the DWS boys host Sherwood.

DWS GIRLS 11, SOUTHLAND 0: Cheyenne Colvin scored three goals and Haley Kincheloe and Candace Cosby each had two to lead the Lady Knights (7-1-1, 4-0) to an easy region win.

Also scoring for DWS were Casey Kincheloe, Mackenzie Davis, Bailey Weed and Mckenzie Hudson.

Davis and Katie Williams combined for the shutout.
