MOULTRIE -- Rance John Taylor, Jr., 78, of 318 East Fincher Ave., died Monday, March 19, 2012 at the V.A. Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla.
Funeral services will be 4:30 P.M. Thursday, March 22, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Doerun with the Rev. David Benton officiating. Interment, with military and Masonic rites will follow in Doerun Cemetery.
His nephews will serve as casketbearers. The deacons of First Baptist Church, Masons and Shriners will serve as honorary escorts.
Born May 8, 1933 in Cairo, he was the son of the late Rance John "R.J." Taylor, Sr. and Louise Cone Taylor. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a farmer. He was a former mayor of Doerun, was a former Colquitt County Commissioner and served on the board of Colquitt Regional Medical Center. He was Past Master of Doerun Masonic Lodge # 151, was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Hasan Shrine Temple and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mr. Taylor was past president of the Moultrie Shrine Club, was a past commander of the Doerun American Legion, and was a member of V.F.W. Post 4830. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Doerun, where he served as a Deacon.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James Robert "Cub" Taylor.
Survivors include his wife, Avie Coleman Taylor of Doerun; one daughter, Kay Taylor Blair and husband Mike of Doerun; one son, Jay Taylor of Albany; one sister, Joy Taylor Hatcher and husband Bryant of Lake Seminole, Ga.; two grandchildren, David Blair of Broson, Fla. and Sabrina Blair of Doerun; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Hayden and Christian Hayden, both of Doerun; and a special friend, Jerry Handfield of Doerun.
The family will receive friends on Thursday at the church, one hour prior to the funeral service.
