Bass tourney to benefit Easter Seals

ALBANY — The Albany Bass Club, Plantation Parkway Assembly of God and MillerCoors are working with Easter Seals Southern Georgia to help bring hope to children and adults with disabilities.

On March 31, the 36th annual Team Bass Tournament will be taking place at Lake Walter F. George in Lakepoint Resort State Park in Eufaula, Ala. — located on the other side of the state line from Quitman County.

It is an event to benefit Easter Seals Southern Georgia, which is based in Albany.

“There are a ton of Albany people that participate,” said Nicki Wilson, director of family support services for Easter Seals. “This is the longest-running tournament.”

The event draws people from throughout the region.

It is not unusual to see 200 boats participating, Wilson said.

The fundraising goal for this year is $20,000.

“This is probably the oldest event and most well-known (bass) event,” she said. “It is a way to engage donors. Often times there are people there who have used our services, so it is an opportunity to educate people about services and issues.”

This tournament has provided more than $119,000 since 2000 for needed services.

During 2011, Easter Seals impacted the lives of more than 2,900 children and adults with disabilities and their families, according to the organization’s website.

The festivities will begin at 7 a.m. EDT with the first flight of boats taking off. The weigh-in is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT. (Eufala is in the Central Daylight Time Zone.)

The prizes will include $5,000 for first place, as well as cash and trophies for second, third and fourth place.

There are also cash prizes ranging from $150 to $500 for fifth through 30th place. The lunker will get $500 and a trophy.

The entry fee is $150 per boat.

Advance registration is encouraged by calling Easter Seals at (229) 439-7061. Registration should also be available on-site from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 30, as well as on the day of the tournament.
