CHARLESTON, SC -- SMSgt. Jack Lamar Linder, Sr. (USAF ret), 92, proud American and World War II veteran and Sears retiree, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012. He was the widower of Helen Harrell Linder. He was born February 18, 1920 in Dublin, GA, the fourth of seven children born to the late William Berrien Linder and Mary Elizabeth (Nelson) Linder. He attended public schools in Moultrie GA and graduated from Moultrie (GA) High School in 1936. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1939 and served in the South Pacific Theater during WWII. At 21 years old, he was stationed at Hickam Air Field, Oahu, Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. He also served in Midway, Guam, the Solomon Islands, and other Pacific sites during the war. In 1945, he re-enlisted into the United States Air Force and served until his retirement in 1959, attaining the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, one of the first airmen to have that rank. In his twenty-plus years as an Airman, Flight Mechanic and Flight Engineer he received many honors, among them the World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and many accolades and commendations for his proficiency in performing and teaching aircraft mechanics & flight navigation from B-17s to C-121 Constellations. In 1959, after a full career in the USAF, he joined Sears Roebuck and Co, in Charleston where he worked for another 25 years, retiring in 1985. On November 19, 1950, he married Helen Harrell of Moultrie, GA, and they celebrated 52 years of marriage before her passing in 2003. They have three children: Elizabeth Nelson (Linder) Little (Gil) of Mt Pleasant, SC; Jack Lamar Linder, Jr. (Mary) of Easley, S.C. ; and Dr. Stephen Franklin Linder, Sr. (Jackie) of Chapin, S.C.

He is also survived by six grandchildren, Scott Linder of New York, Katie Linder of Charleston, Gibby Little (Rebecca) of Mt Pleasant, Matt Little (Carolina) of Lexington, SC, Lauren Linder of Chapin, SC and Stephen Linder, Jr. of Chapin, SC, four great-grandchildren: Weston Linder, Charleston; Braden and Jaxson Little of Lexington, SC; and Carter Little of Mt Pleasant, SC. He also has three step grandchildren: Jaclynn Bower Goings (Travis), West Columbia, SC; Jessica Bower, Chapin, SC; Julianne Bower, Greenville, SC. He leaves one brother, Robert Eugene Linder, Sr. of Conway, AR, and many nieces and nephews and friends. Mr. Linder was a member of the David Harris Senior Sunday School at Ashley River Baptist Church, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. Jack Linder are invited to attend his funeral service at 1:00 PM Monday, March 26, 2012, from the sanctuary of Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
