ALBANY, Ga. — Under a hail of gunfire while escaping a robbery, Darrell Morris suffered a wound to his leg, drove about 1.5 miles from where he was attacked and crashed into a tree, an Albany Police Department report states.
The 32-year-old Morris was driving his black Jeep Liberty on the 1900 block of Riverview Circle at about 8:32 p.m. Tuesday. When he pulled over two men tried to rob him at gunpoint, APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said.
“He (Morris) drove off and several shots were fired,” Banks said. “As he drove away, he was shot in the leg while still inside (the Jeep). He struck a tree near the (Dougherty County) jail at Evelyn Avenue near Blaylock Street.”
Dougherty County EMS took Morris in an ambulance to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. No information from a hospital spokeswoman was available before press time.
“His injury does not appear to be life-threatening at this time,” Banks said.
Officers overheard on a police scanner described the gunshot as from a .22 caliber gun. No word was available on whether it was a handgun or a long gun.
