Brown strives to make a difference

ALBANY -- An EIP (early intervention program) teacher, Morningside Elementary School's Teacher of the Year Gistacy Brown has been at the school since 2007 and in EIP since 2010.

She is one of eight nominees for the Dougherty County School System's 2012 Teacher of the Year, who will be named at a banquet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Live Oak Elementary.

"I am elated to be my school's teacher of the year," Brown said. "It means a lot to me to know that my peers feel about me that way. I feel blessed."

Being an EIP teacher is not an easy job, but Brown finds it rewarding.

"In EIP, we get the students who are not meeting standards," she said. "We have students who in the beginning are low achievers, but near the end of the year you see the growth and the gains they have made and it leaves you with a good feeling."

The most difficult part of the job, she said, is establishing a connection with each student.

"We get the struggling kids and we have to find a way to reach each every child." Brown said. "They are all different and unique, but they can all be reached."

Brown holds a B.S. in early childhood education from Albany State University, and an M.S. in curriculum and instruction and an Ed.D in organizational leadership from Nova University.
