ALBANY, Ga — Lake Park Elementary School Teacher of the Year Terri Sue Brown glows when she talks about her work as a third-grade reading and language arts teacher.

But just don’t call it a job.

“I don’t see this as a job. This is part of my identity. This is what I do,” Brown, who has been at Lake Park since 2003, said.

She is one of eight nominees for the Dougherty County School System’s 2012 Teacher of the Year, who will be named at a banquet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Live Oak Elementary.

“I am honored to be Lake Park’s teacher of the year,” she said. “It means that people notice the hard work and dedication we put in every day. I work with such a great group of teachers.”

Brown, who holds a B.S. in early childhood education from Georgia Southwestern State University, says reaching her students is critical.

“I really enjoy seeing my kids become successful,” she said. “You have to realize that we are in competition with Xboxes, PS2s, video games and other distractions. I have to make learning more fun than an electronic device.

“It is a challenge, and I love a challenge.”

When asked what was the hardest part about her profession, Brown replied, “There are not enough hours in the day. Like I said before, to me teaching is not hard, but it is a challenge.”
