Former UGA golf star Russell Henley won the Nationwide Tour's Stadion Classic last year as an amateur, but he will return this Thursday to defend his title, this time as a touring pro.
ATHENS — The University of Georgia men’s golf program will be well represented in the Nationwide Tour’s Stadion Classic at UGA that begins Thursday.
Ex-Bulldogs Russell Henley, Hudson Swafford, Justin Bolli, Paul Claxton and Richard Scott are among the members of the Nationwide Tour playing at the UGA Golf Course. They will be joined by current Georgia standouts Brian Carter and Nicholas Reach, who received berths as the Bulldogs with the lowest scoring average this season. In addition, Georgia graduate Scott Parel, who did not play collegiate golf but has been adopted by the Bulldogs, also will be teeing it up as a member of the Nationwide Tour.
Henley is the defending champion of the tournament. As a senior for the Bulldogs last year, he became just the second amateur to ever win a Nationwide Tour event.
An added benefit for the ex-Bulldogs in the field is that they are getting to use their old locker in the team's Boyd Golf Center.
“Having the tournament at the UGA Golf Course is pretty exciting, but it’s made even more special by having so many Bulldogs in the field,” said Georgia coach Chris Haack, who coached all but Claxton and Parel. “I think this week is a real celebration of Georgia golf.”
The tournament will be held Thursday through Sunday at the UGA Golf Course. The field is made up of 156 players, with a purse of $550,000.
