ALBANY — Monroe senior Nicholas Plummer stepped on Brewton-Parker’s basketball court for a workout earlier this year, and Brewton-Parker coach Jarvis Smith didn’t want him to leave.

“After his first game at the workout, I looked at one of my assistant coaches and said, ‘We can’t let this kid leave without signing him,’ ” Smith said.

Monroe’s shooting guard was offered a scholarship on the spot, and he officially signed his letter-of-intent with the NAIA school on Wednesday in the Monroe High School Media Center.

“I had a good workout. My shot was on,” said Plummer, who averaged 10 points this season. “I chose Brewton-Parker because I developed a good relationship with the coach. (Smith) is really looking forward to me playing with them, and I feel comfortable there. It will be a good fit.”

Smith pulled Plummer’s parents to the side during the workout and told them he wanted his son to be part of the future of the Brewton-Parker program.

“He could blow it up his freshman year,” Smith said Wednesday. “Shooting guard is a spot we were weak at this year, and with his size and ability and what he does on the defensive end, he fits right in with us. He has an opportunity to come in and make a name for himself right away.”

Plummer established himself as one of Monroe’s top shooters his senior season, capitalizing on his first opportunity to be in the starting lineup. He also made the most of the opening game of his senior season when he led the Tornadoes in scoring with 20 points against a larger Class AAAAA Tift County program.

“My shot was falling and it was the start of a good season,” said Plummer, who also had an offer from Division II North Greenville. “When your shot is falling, it gives you more confidence and faith to make that next one.”

Monroe coach Marquis Davis said his starting shooting guard developed into one of his best perimeter scorers.

“I think the best basketball is yet to come from him,” Davis said. “He is going to be a great player for Brewton-Parker. He is a kid who has manifested over the last four years. His freshman and sophomore year he saw a lot of improvement. He started us off this year with that 20-point game against Tift County. He was a little inconsistent during the year, but we saw some great things from him.”
