ALBANY, Ga. -- The Albany Chorale is one of the oldest singing groups in Albany. On May 17 at the Chehaw Creekside Education Center, the Chorale will hold its annual fundraiser in an effort to keep that tradition going.

This year's event will be a change of pace from past Chorale fundraisers. In previous years, an auction was the highlight. This year, in an effort to simplify and stand out from many other fundraisers going on at about the same time, there will be no auction.

Rather, the highlight of the event will be a show filled with great performances.

"It will be just a good, solid show," said Christen Taylor, one of the organizers of the event.

The theme of the evening will be "Whisked Away," featuring songs about travel and finding and losing love.

"Music can take you away to find love, can take you away from love or help you learn to love yourself," Taylor said. "That's what the theme is about."

Some of the music included will be Irish ditties, some 1970s singer-songwriter creations and more. The music will be presented by many individual performers as well as a few group numbers.

Throughout rehearsals, the audience has been in the forefront of organizers' minds.

"We want the audience to reminisce about love," Taylor said. "It's just going to be a fun, relaxed evening. The audience can stand up and dance and really get into the music."

The Chorale has been working on the show for several months and is anticipating a room filled with audience participation. The group is hoping that the event will not only help them earn money to keep the group alive but will also raise awareness of the group itself.

"The Chorale is a good, positive, unique thing in this town," Taylor said. "There is nothing like it in Albany for adults."

And although the event is different from the other performances throughout the year, Taylor says that a little change can be good for the group and its fans.

"We've done a lot of requiems over the year, and we like to take a break from that for the fundraiser," she said. "It allows us to show the individuals more, and to show off the individual talent. We are trying to grow our diversity."

"Whisked Away" is the last event of the Chorale's season, and it is an effort to fund the group's 2012-2013 season, which will kick off around August. The Chorale has about 50 members, and around 20 of them will be featured in the show.

Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served, and there will be a cash bar with beer and wine available. The event will be a semi-formal to dressy-casual affair.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.. The event begins at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $30 for individuals and $55 for couples. They can be purchased at the door, the Albany Area Arts Council and from Chorale members.

Sounds wonderful! I was preparing to get tickets when realized it's on Thursday night. That's the problem with many Albany fundraisers. Many of us can't do weeknight events with work and family schedules, particularly coming from out of town. Would have made a fine Saturday night. Best wishes.
