BIRMINGHAM, AL -- John H. Chadwell, who chaired the Music and Fine Arts Department at Albany State University from 1956 through 1964, passed away in Birmingham, AL on May 7, 2012 at the age of 88. Mr. Chadwell conducted the ASU Choir with great acclaim during his time and was an associate professor whose course load also included English. He assembled a department staff that included noted ASU Faculty members T. Marshall Jones and Egbert J. Bacon.

Mr. Chadwell left ASU in 19643 to assume a similar role at his alma mater, Alabama State University in Montgomery. He had a career transition in 1967 when he returned to his home of Toledo, OH and was appointed vice President of Corporate Personnel and Community Services at Owens-Illinois, Inc. He was the first African American to serve as corporate executive for this multinational company. In 1982, he returned to higher education when he accepted an appointment as Vice President for Development and Institutional Advancement as Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, TX. He retired in 1990 and lived the remainder of his life in Birmingham.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Richardine Chadwell, and his son, Garland Keith Chadwell of Durham, NC.
