Man arrested for assault on woman

ALBANY, Ga. — Carol Dozier, 79, believes her attacker should get life in prison for the brutal beating he gave her.

Dozier offered the assessment in a telephone interview Tuesday following the arrest of 42-year-old Lucious Gene Sutton Jr. in the assault.

Dozier answered her doorbell Friday at her Lynwood Lane home and was met by a fist to her face at the beginning of a brutal attack by Sutton, according to Albany Police Department reports.

Sutton faces aggravated assault charges for attacking Dozier, beating her in the face and knocking her down, said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman. In addition, he has been charged with burglary and motor vehicle theft, she said.

“We had an anonymous tip that led us to Sutton,” Banks said. “That and a surveillance tape from the South Slappey Post Office and the interviews with him at the LEC (Law Enforcement Center) led to the charges against him.”

At his first appearance in court Tuesday Sutton was denied bail, said a Dougherty County Jail spokeswoman.

According to police reports, after Sutton beat Dozier, he rummaged in her purse, stole money and the keys to her 2012 Honda Accord. The Honda was found abandoned on the 1300 block of Colquitt Avenue by police.

Sutton has a history of violent crimes including aggravated assault, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a felon that stretch back years, court records stated. He was released April 2 from the Albany Transitional Center after a nine-year sentence in prison for a violent robbery, a center spokesman said.
