Squawk of the Day - May 20, 2012

"William Wright said the teachers who cheated on CRCT were just trying to give low income children a degree of hope. Since when does cheating give hope? How much hope does a graduate who can’t read have?"

All of this is just a shame.Teachers are to set an example. What did this tell the children? Cheat to get ahead. That is wrong, you may not be able to tell they are hurting right now(THE CHILDREN) but just wait till they try doing what the teachers done, cheat. Then you will want to say something is wrong with the children. It takes leaders to teach, and if you want to teach, there are good teachers out there, teach the kids the right thing. They need all the help they can get.Yes you have some that dont want to learn, but if you give them a chance, and make it intresting to learn, they will want to learn. They can learn cheating on the streets. The teachers who got cought are just trying to get out of what they thought no one would find out about. The NAACP,needs to stick to something they know about.Racial unrest, they do that real good. All Black people do not feel the way Wright does, they would like to have better for there kids.Mr. Wright bit off more than he could chew with this one,Black and White will come together when it comes to the Children, you wait and see.

Teachers can be role models, but kids are not so weak-minded that they will think cheating is acceptable because the teachers cheated. The teachers were fired, so the consequences should make an impression, too. Children need to learn that bad things happen, and they are caused by bad choices. Parents could point that out when the family is sitting at the dinner table with the television off.

What has the NAACP really done for the poor children in Albany? No tutoring sessions, NOTHING but take their parents money and spout off a few words that have no merit. Now I have seen some of the questions on the CRCT and I do believe that the CRCT should be geared to the region that it is given. It should even be worded so black children can understand it. Some words they just do not understand. It does not talk about redding up a house, but similiar situations that children in this area have no clue. If this were done, you would see the scores change. I have always felt that Math should be taught in the morning instead of after lunch. Those babies are sleepy and this is not the time to start math. Teach it earlier and you will see improvements! Try anything that will help the schools!

Are we talking about helping the schools or helping the students? They may not be the same. Gearing the test for the reigon is not much different than back in the "old days" when they said "how much schoolin' do you need to boresite a mule".

Love it! Heard a lot of sayings but perhaps not old enough to have experienced that one. Children in the school system will live all over the nation when they hopefully graduate and are expected to understand, speak, and function like others. Tailoring tests to the region is a crutch and encourages education in the region to remain the same--keep on crutching. Reminds me of the "chitlin test" so popular years ago. Teach to a reasonable level, don't lower the standards anymore--we are already turning out many kids that don't function well in the business world beyond McDonalds.

Are you suggesting a new language for this region? Seems to me they should be taught the English language so they can fall into step with the rest of the world! Ebonics should be out the door!

Maybe the parents need to involve themselves with assisting their children with homework and seeing that they have proper rest instead of dragging them all over the place from can to can't. Most of the children do not know who their Daddy is and do not have a normal home life. Mother's need to be more responsible. It is the children who unfortunately pay. Morals begin in the home.

the teachers who cheated were trying to cover their inadequacies as teachers.... period...

William Wright, a part of the problem, not a part of the solution. He likes to hear himself talk and is not likely to change.

In William Wrights views, he might as well just be telling the children that it is okay to cheat, do what you have to do by any means necessary. It doesn't matter if you learn anything or not. The most important thing is "You gots your deplooma, yous gots to dos this in everday life, uncle whitey aints gonna do it for you" Believe me, the black community would be 100% better off if there were not idiots like William Wright around.

I have a problem with a lot of squawkers on this blog. Many times you are on the mark with your criticisms about what is going on in this community. There are also times when I totally disagree with many of you. But it never fails that at some point in the discussions overt racial remarks come out and sours my taste for participating in the discussion. The NAACP does not represent the viewpoints of all African Americans. Not all African Americans in Dougherty County have what you call an "entitlement mentality". All African American children are not gang bangers nor do they all live in single parent households. African Americans in this community have diversed political opinions and all of them don't vote the same way in all elections. That's why Sheriff Sproul won over James Williams. I wish that there were more examples but sadly there are not. But my point is everyone regardless of color should be treated as an individual. No one person or group of people in Albany can speak for or accurately represent every Black person in this town, just as the views in this sqawkbox do not represent the viewpoints of every White person in Albany.

Sproul won over Williams because "African-Americans... have "diversed political opinions and all of them don't vote the same way in all elections." Bunch of empty rhetoric! Geez!

"How much hope does a graduate who can't read have?"

Well they could hope to aspire to become a de-frocked "head" of a supefluous sham of an organization that claims to represent Colored People.

Or they could aspire to a lifetime spot on the Democrat Plantation with Democrat Overseers who will trade "Life's Basics" for their "Life's Vote".

If anyone really wanted to help the Students, it has to start with basics. They need a good Work Ethic to build on. One that places study over computer games and hangin. Then that work ethic can go on to the job. They need a basic thought process so they know what to do when the power goes out and all the computers and calculators no longer work. The thought process will help them think logically, and progressively. Instead of just pushing buttons or keys, they might actually know what is happening when they do that. This is what Industry is looking for. Someone that comes to work, on time every day. Someone that can troubleshoot a process and knows what to do to correct a problem. Someone that is innovative and can revamp a process to be more efficient. That is what made America great, and we need to return to that mind set.

Once again the school system gets a failing grade and not just in Albany. I graduated DHS in '69 and went on to college without any remedial classes before I could take the "101" classes. We are taking this "melting pot" nation down the road of divisiveness instead of diversity. Yes, I have pride in my ancestry but I don't claim to be a ??????-American. I am an American. Nations(a vast majority 3rd world) claim their religion, tribe, clan, ethnicity, etc. before they claim their nationality. The sooner we start teaching good old reading, writing, and arithmetic and have families that value education, honesty, showing up on time, and the list goes on we will be hard pressed to find qualified burger flippers much less anyone that knows how to use a bunsen burner or that can solve a calculus equation...Throw in a Civics class too...... When the cheaters are the teachers, what do we expect the kids to learn?????

When you were in school, students were held accountable and were given the grades they earned. Now, a student earns a poor grade, and the school is blamed, so the student is given additional chances. Students don't try because they know the school will pass them. As long as they pass, the students, the parents, and the DOE are happy - the students aren't prepared for anything, but no one seems to care. Parents should be screaming at the lawmakers who put this system in place.

Blame the teachers (and call ALL of them "cheaters") if it makes you feel good, but you are WAY off!

rorshach.....I have a real problem with decent blacks who don't raise hell with the black thugs....the perception of blacks is never gonna change until the blacks clean their act up....you don't see any prejudice toward asians or any other nationality in this country....why?...because they don't come here and get on welfare and adopt a criminal lifestyle.... We need all the prominent black people including actors, athletes and political figures to raise hell with the criminals and get the message across that they hurting all blacks with their criminality and entitlement behavior.....you ought to be out patrolling the neighborhoods and helping police arrest them instead of covering up or making excuses for their behavior....blacks shouldn't tolerate the likes of james bush, velvet riggins or appointing an unqualified person like Murphree to be head of the school system.....

I too believe Mr. Wright is Mr. wrong. There is no excuse for cheating. The teachers who were told to do so should have went to the authorities above their principals, but I know that can be hard. The only thing a can say about the situation is that we can all learn something from it. The pressure of being in the school system of any county to perform at a constant high level is hard to do. Also, we need people on the school board that are CAREER EDUCATOR not just people that are popular in the city.
