LEESBURG — The trophy case in the Nichols’ household just keeps growing.

Daniel Nichols, Lee County’s star senior slugger who is headed to Georgia next season, followed in his older brother Thomas’ footsteps Monday when he, too, was named the Region 1-AAAA Player of the Year. Thomas Nichols, who went on to star at Georgia Tech, won the same award five years ago and was also named The Herald’s Ray Knight Player of the Year — an award Daniel Nichols is certainly in the running for.

“He just had a monster year for us,” Lee County coach Rob Williams said of Daniel, who batted .480, led the team in HRs with 10 and notched 36 total hits — including five doubles — to go along with 36 RBI and 33 runs scored. “He came up with so many clutch hits time and again (as our No. 3 hitter).”

Williams then added with a laugh: “We’ve been writing the Nichols name in our lineup for a long time — I just wish we could keep doing it.”

Daniel becomes Lee’s first 1-AAAA Player of the Year since Thomas, and joins current MLB star and former Lee standout Buster Posey as past winners of the honor.

Lee placed one other player on the First Team — junior Andrew Stroud — while Posey’s youngest brother, Jess, was named to the Second Team, along with Mark Fowler. Both Jess Posey and Fowler are seniors.
