ALBANY — Edwin Green, long time member of Albany Kiwanis, has received the 2012 Albany Kiwanian of the Year Award.

Green also received an award for his outstanding service as club secretary for the past seven years.

Green joined Albany Kiwanis in 1993. Over the past 20 years, he has served as president of the club, served on the board for many years, and has served as club secretary.

Green has been a member of the Orientation Leadership team, twice been recognized as the Kiwanian of the Year, received the Georgia Leadership Medallion from the District Governor of Kiwanis, and received the John Cole Award for the Committee Chairman of the Year.

Although health concerns prevented him from being able to serve in this capacity, Green was elected unanimously by all the clubs in Division 3 to serve as lieutenant governor for 2013.

Despite his numerous roles inside the club, Green’s claim to fame is his dedication to the Read Around the World Program.

He donned his Cat in the Hat costume on a weekly basis and read to children in the Dougherty County Schools.

In addition to reading every week in several locations, Green also recruited others to participate. He gave out Cat in the Hat attire to those who would assist him with reading to the children.

Club officials said “an entire generation of readers will remember Ed as the Cat in the Hat that came to their school and engaged them in the wonderment of reading.”
