LOCAL SPORTS BRIEFS: ASU volleyball makes history, wraps perfect conference season at 16-0; Darton women's hoops rolls in season opener

ALBANY — The ASU volleyball team ended 16-0 in conference play for the first time since the schedule was expanded from 10 to 16 games years ago, using a 3-0 sweep of Fort Valley State (25-23, 25-18, 25-11) on Friday to achieve the feat.

“The girls knew what was at stake, and Fort Valley came at us hard,” ASU coach Robert Skinner said. “But these girls weren’t going to lose. They knew this wasn’t the night to lose.”

Skinner also hopes the victory bodes well for today’s showdown between the two schools in football in the 23rd annual Fountain City Classic.

“I don’t know how many years where, if we won in volleyball they would win the game, but I know it happened last year,” Skinner said. “So we hope they can do the same thing.
