What have you learned lately?

‘What have you learned lately?” the woman asked and the room full of people sat in silence, myself included. It’s not all about books and papers, lectures and talks, she went on to explain. You’re learning every second of every day.

“Like Mandy here,” she said, catching me off guard as I sat in my little seat on the front row. I hadn’t meant to sit on the front row, usually don’t even like sitting on the front row, but was in the last bunch to get there and that was the only seat left.

“I bet Mandy has learned that it’s best to show up a few minutes early so she won’t have to sit on the front row and get called out,” she said as the room laughed. “Add that to your list.” Then she challenged us all to make a list of things we’ve learned lately. Not through studying or reading or watching television, even. Just by going about your everyday life.

And so I did.

Things I have learned lately

  1. My old Blackberry is better than my new Iphone.
  2. Indifference is as important as passion.
  3. Whatever goes around, comes around.
  4. The world would be a much better place if everybody took more naps.
  5. Anything tastes better with bacon on it.
  6. There are such things as stupid questions.
  7. Money doesn’t buy class.
  8. If there is a sale on Stouffers frozen entrees at Publix, my husband will be there.
  9. Everyone you see deserves to be given a smile without expecting one in return.
  10. Give advice only if you’re asked or if someone’s life depends on it.
  11. If there is one grocery buggy out of 200 that has a whopsided wheel, I will end up with it.
  12. Whopsided is not in the dictionary.
  13. People don’t always value what they get for free.
  14. Never try to pass off Kentucky Fried Chicken as your own.
  15. We are all hypocrites.
  16. Being wise is better than being smart.
  17. Those who complain the most accomplish the least.
  18. Hot chocolate is better made with milk than with water.
  19. No matter how many times you ask your dog how his day was, he will not tell you.
  20. Nobody has it all figured out.
  21. Quality bras are worth the money.
  22. Your children are your best mirrors.
  23. There is always another way of looking at things.
  24. It is not worth the calories unless it is chocolate or chocolate covered.
  25. The people you expect to kick you when you’re down are sometimes the ones who help you back up.
  26. More times than not, it’s none of my business.
  27. Get over it.
  28. You’re never too old for Play Doh.
  29. Dirty laundry breeds when you aren’t looking and has lots and lots of offspring.
  30. Be honest.
  31. You can lead a husband to the toilet, but you can’t make him clean it.
  32. I should never be asked to sing in public.
  33. Don’t borrow trouble.
  34. Being on time shows respect.
  35. The less time I have, the more I get done.
  36. Don’t shoot the messanger.
  37. Empathy is an awesome virtue.
  38. Not all lotions smell good.
  39. If you think you’re in a conversation and you’re the only one talking, it’s a monologue.
  40. When you mess up, say you messed up.
  41. I do, on occasion, snore.
  42. Not everybody’s mama raised them right.
  43. There is never an excuse for bad manners.
  44. Losing stinks.
  45. It’s more difficult to make a list than it seems.

And always get where you’re going a few minutes early so you don’t have to sit on the front row.
