ALBANY, Ga. -- River Road Church of Christ is set to host a food giveaway aimed to benefit the community's needy and senior citizens on Saturday.

The giveaway will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., or whenever supplies run out, at the church, located at 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

To prevent duplication of services, officials are asking that just one representative from each family come in. Those that come by will be asked to show a utility bill or photo ID, and afterward complete a form -- which will inquire as to the number of people in their family.

Once the form is completed, they will receive a ticket. When their ticket number is called, they will receive food.

"We won't turn anyone away," said Robert Clemons, senior minister of the River Road Church of Christ. "We don't ask about income.

"We all know the economy has been tough. When we've been blessed, we know it's the right thing to do (to give back)."

The items they are giving away will include fresh vegetables, bread and cakes. In all, there is 4,000 pounds of food to distribute that is being donated by Second Harvest of South Georgia, Clemons said.

"It's not a total meal, but it will assist for a day or two," he said.

Officials emphasize that food will be given away on a first come, first serve basis. Church officials say they are also expecting to host two or three food distribution events next year.

It's nice to hear about this church's generosity however, I hate to think of people taking advantage of that. They have to do what God is leading them to do and I truly hope those that are in need are the ones that receive the help!
