ALBANY — About the only surprising thing about Westover’s Harley Calhoun being named the Region 1-AAAA Athletic Director of the Year is that it took so long.
Calhoun, who is in his third year as the athletic director at Westover, was named the region’s top AD at the region meeting.
The seven-school conference honored him for heading up the overall program at Westover, where Calhoun has won numerous coach of the year awards.
“I’m excited about it,’’ Calhoun said Wednesday. “I’ve had the opportunity to be named coach of the year in track, swimming and cross country, but to be named the region athletic director of the year is a huge honor because of the sports program overall. That’s something we’ve always taken great pride in, along with our high standard for academics.’’
Westover’s overall sports program has been the jewel of the region for years, and has won the region’s all-sports trophy, which represents success across the board in all sports, for six consecutive years.
“We are proud of that,’’ Calhoun said. “And I am extremely honored to with this award.
“I’ve never won this before, and I appreciate it because it’s based on the overall athletic program and sportsmanship.”
