James Allen Brown, Sr.

CUTHBERT -- James Allen (Buck) Brown, Sr., 86, of Fort. Gaines, GA died peacefully on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Fort Gaines Healthcare.

He was born October 25, 1926 in Dawson, Ga. Buck was the son of the late George Jefferson Brown and Bernice Stephens Brown. He attended schools in Terrell County and graduated from Dawson High School.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He joined the Navy at the age of 17, upon graduation from high school. When the War was over he resumed his education, graduating from Middle Georgia College and the University of Georgia with a BBA degree. Later, he graduated from the Georgia School of Banking at the University of Georgia.

Buck and his family have lived in Fort Gaines since 1955. Prior to Fort Gaines they lived in Columbus, Ga. Where he worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. In 1951, Buck met his wife Peggy, while living there. Columbus was also the birth place of their two sons.

In 1955, Buck began a 36 year banking career with Fort Gaines Banking Company. He held every position in the bank and was the President during the 1985 merger between Fort Gaines Banking Company and First State Bank. After the merger he held the position of City President and continued serving the community he loved until his retirement in 1991.

He was an active member of the Fort Gaines Presbyterian Church. He was a Ruling Elder and Treasurer for over 50 years and faithfully served the church in many ways.

He also served as a member of the Fort Gaines City council, a member of the Clay County Hospital Authority, a member of the Lions Club, and was active in the Boy Scouts of America during the years that his sons were involved.

Buck was an avid sportsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and many other outdoor activities. As a teenager, He raised racing homing pigeons and competed against other pigeon trainers. Later, his interests were centered in breeding and training birddogs. He participated in field trials throughout the Southeast. He treasured the wonderful friendships he gained through these events.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Lewis Brown.

He is survived by his loving wife Peggy Grimsley Brown, his two sons James Allen Brown, Jr. (wife Mi La ) and Robert Lewis (Bob) Brown, one grandson John Bae, a Sister-in-law Sue Grimsley Cook, two devoted nieces Cathy Rice and Susie Rhodes, one nephew Morris Cook, and a host of great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be at Lunsford Funeral Home, 54 Court St. Cuthbert, Ga. On Friday November. 9, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 PM. A celebration of life will be held at Fort Gaines Presbyterian Church on Sat. November. 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM, with interment at the New Park Cemetery. The Rev. Walter Flint will officiate, assisted by Dr. Fay Isele.
