Apartment raid yields assault-style firearms

ALBANY, Ga. — Police officers called out the SWAT team and converged on 2401 Nottingham Way at 9 p.m. Monday in search of weapons, an Albany Police Department report stated.

“SWAT was called out in reference to the search warrant due to weapons,” police Detective Timothy Harvey said. “We continued our investigation and found assault-style weapons and a handgun.”

Officers confiscated the weapons, but no one is in custody while the investigation continues, Harvey said. He declined to give specifics such as the names of the people involved, who had the guns, the apartment residents’ names and the make and caliber of the weapons confiscated, due to the ongoing investigation.

“Charges are pending,” Harvey said, “and arrests are expected.”

A resident called a tip on the weapons violations in to Harvey on his day off, an APD spokeswoman said. After the tip, Harvey started the investigation that led to the apartment and the guns.

No one was injured in the raid.

Is it against the law to have "Assault-style weapons" in the city? Was it because the people possessing the weapons were felons? Had some illegal activity involving the weapons taken place? Did the police not inform the Herald or was this just lazy reporting?

Maybe they weren't purchased legally or had serial numbers missing. They could have been on probation and not allowed to possess weapons of any kind. I agree that the facts were not reported well. We'll see if there is an update with more details.

Those apartments are nothing but a headache for the residents who live around them and attract the criminal element into the Sherwood neighborhood. I am sick and tired of this going on and it has only worsened the crime in the area. The City needs to step and put a stop to the madness. We are sick and tired of fighting.

I own assault weapons, but I've never heard of an "assault style" weapon. I wonder if it is similar to a "gangnam style" weapon?

Some of those apartments in that area advertise crime free community, but guess that is just to draw tenants.

"You can bet your sweet "a$$" the cops will manufacture some kind of charges to cover their sweet "a$$"."

The cops won't have to. The typical albany title 8 apt. dweller is about as bright as a bag of hammers. I assure you, there was something illegal about the weapons. Wait and see. You can bet YOUR sweet a$$ on that.
