LOCAL SPORTS BRIEFS: Darton men's soccer hosts national semifinal today; Sherwood boys hoops opens with win, girls lose

ALBANY — After a pair of wins against Western Wyoming and Western Texas in pool play, the Darton men’s soccer team will play in the semifinals of the NJCAA Division I National Tournament today.

The No. 1 seed Cavs, who are hosting the tournament, play No. 4 seed Tyler (Texas) at 5 p.m. in the first of two semifinal games.

If Darton (19-0) wins, it will play in Saturday’s national championship game at noon.

“It’s a joy to win, every game,” said Darton sophomore Jowayne Laidley said after Wednesday’s final game of pool play. “But (today’s) game – to be in the final four now – means a lot.”

The Cavs finished tied for third in the nation last season.

SCA boys win season opener, girls fall

ALBANY — The Sherwood Christian Academy boys basketball team won its opening game of the season, beating Highland Christian, 62-49, in the Byne Tip-Off Classic on Thursday.

The Eagles were led by Patrick Stafford, who dropped in 19 points, and Dalton Todd, who scored 17. SCA (1-0) meets the winner of the Grace/Byne game at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

g HIGHLAND CHRISTIAN GIRLS 48, SHERWOOD 41: The Sherwood girls basketball team dropped its season opener to Highland Christian Academy in the Byne Tip-Off Classic.

Madison Walker led the Lady Eagles with 10 points, while Markeria Lewis added nine.

Sherwood (0-1) plays again Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against the winner of the Grace/Byne game.
