Mother, 81, left in horrid conditions

ALBANY — Two brothers left their 81-year-old mother in conditions described at times as abominable, terrible and beyond filthy by Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Craig Dodd.

Verma Patterson Walker, a retired teacher, was found by emergency medical personnel Nov. 7 after one brother called because he thought she was dead, Dodd said. “I have never seen anyone that looked that bad in person who wasn’t dead,” Dodd said.

Walker is in critical condition at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital said a hospital spokeswoman..

The brothers — Vernon West, 59, and Roderick West, 55 — are being held in the Dougherty County Jail with no bail available, according to the jail’s automated answering system. They are charged with cruelty to a person over 65 years old and have no bond, the system stated.

“The granddaughter moved out about a month and a half ago. It looks like she has not been fed or bathed in a month and a half,” Dodd said. “She had ants and maggots crawling in her ulcers and bedsores. There was feces in her room. It was beyond filthy. The rest of the house looked fairly clean.”

According to Dodd, the brothers’ excuse was that they exercised “poor judgment” in taking care of their mother in her Betty’s Drive home.

Deputies are investigating the brothers’ financial situation with an eye as to whether they took money from their mother, Dodd said.

The case will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, he added.

These two need something worse than life in prison...lock them in a room, put some ants in there with them, feed them when you feel like it, and then look them in the face and tell them "you exercised poor judgment."

The "poor judgment" excuse works for the DCSS but it ain't gonna cut it on this one, boys.

Poor judgement, what a joke! The only poor judgement made was leaving her in the care of these two. They woulf have done her a better favor by putting her in a nursing home than living like she was.

Poor woman. The elderly often suffer in silence at the hands of their supposed "loved ones." In a way I hope she is unaware of her circumstances. It would break my heart to know someone I loved and raised could be so cruel and heartless.

I bet they used "good judgement" stealing her government checks. Jail is too good for the slime.

I am so very disappointed in you Vernon. Your mother cared for you, William and Roderick much too well and even if not, you must have lost your soul to treat her or anyone that way. I only wish that I could share a cell with you and "whip your a.. like the "punk" you have proven to be. Go ahead my brother, safe the system and take yourself out - what have you gained. There are no OG's from the Park/SS to support your stupidity. Burn in hell!!
