ALBANY, Ga. — The Dougherty County Board of Education emerged from executive session Monday morning with Chairman James Bush saying the BOE would ask the the Georgia School Board Association (GSBA) for help in finding an interim replacement for outgoing Superintendent Joshua Murfree.

Murfree and the board reached an agreement last week to terminate his contract as superintendent early, agreeing on a Dec. 18 departure date. While Murfree will get paid through the end of his contract — June 7, 2013 — the board must now find an interim replacement until a full-fledged search can be conducted.

“I plan on calling Sis Henry (GSBA executive director) today and will be asking them to suggest a name for our interim superintendent,” Bush said. “We want someone from out of the area. I know we have several strong candidates within the region, but because of this situation we find ourselves in we want to make this move without a whole lot of political maneuvering.”

Bush said the Board hopes to have the interim superintendent in place by the end of December.

Later in the meeting the board, by a 6-0 vote, authorized repayment of $167,000 in questionable FY2011 Title 1 expenditures back to the Georgia Department of Education.

This money is in addition to the more than $130,000 repaid to the state last month for questionable expenditures in FY2012.

The two repayments, however, don’t get the system off the hook with the DOE, which is still looking into expenditures in at least 10 other federal programs, including Race to the Top, IDEA ( Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and SIG (School Improvement Grants) grants.

In addition, the state is still in the process of setting up the District’s FRM (Free or Reduced Meals) program, which was the genesis of the state involvement into the District’s federal programs expenditures.

Dougherty citizens need to know full details of the repayment of the expenditures. Why, who, what, where, when. Murfree's, Goseer's and Graper's last paychecks should be withheld until all answers are in, accepted and disclosed.

The school board should begin evaluating the necessity of an in-house law enforcement agency.

The what, when, and where was in a 37 page .pdf document in an earlier article about the expenses. Very interesting read. Since it looks like they will be repaying the funds, it looks like they're saying "guilty."

they are just trying to keep down any more issues araising.. I agree with thee decision.. they are under the fire right now and dont wanna burn any more.. so why not just do it adn avoid anything further at least from Title 1..

The "why" is what interests me and we won't see any explanation. The prima facie evidence is perhaps weakness in the head, a first cousin to "stupidity".

mr_nobody, do you have a citation on the article or date that included the 37 pp document?

I thought a superintendent of schools was being hired. What the heck does Bush mean with the phrase "political maneuvering"? Hire the best quality person we can afford and who is willing to come to a system that needs a LOT of work. I don't care what political party the candidate belongs to, as long as he is not a Gimmedat.

I think the term "political maneuvering" was an admission of guilt on the soon-to-be-former #34. Perhaps this time the hiring will be different since we have been burned once using our better judgement on who to select.

Asking for help to appoint an interim superintendent is the first smart thing this board has done in three years.

Why call the GSBA Mr. Chairman? Why don't you consult with the community? I am sure people within the community could help you find a suitable candidate.

Looks like they don't want to mess this up this time. That's a good thing... Perhaps there is hope yet...
