Walter J. Burgess, Sr.

CAMILLA -- Dr. Walter J. Burgess, Sr., 79, of Mitchell Co., died Friday, November 16, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Rev. Tom Newman will officiate.

Born November 14, 1933 in Pavo, Ga., Dr. Burgess was the son of the late James Robert and Autrey Bartley Burgess, the tenth of eleven children. He graduated from Thomasville High School and was an alumni of Florida State University and Georgia State University where he earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1971. He served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict on the staff of Admiral Forrest Sherman. Beginning his career at ABAC, Dr. Burgess retired from the University System of Georgia in 1997 as the Dean of the School of Business (Albany State University). He served as Pastor of three churches over a span of 35 years, Rebecca Baptist Church in Rebecca, Ga., Wayside Baptist Church, Waynesboro, Va., and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Mitchell Co.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Joyce Hart Burgess to whom he always referred to as the love of his life; son, Walter Burgess, Jr. & wife Merri; daughter, Catherine Burgess McKinnon & husband Earl; five grandchildren, Ian Smith, Shelby Burgess, Justin McKinnon, Aiden McKinnon, and Jackson McKinnon; sisters, Pearlie Burgess Williams of Snellville and Katie Burgess Watkins of Albany; sisters in law, Lucille Burgess of Thomasville, Marelle Burgess of Hinesville, Lisa Hart Vick (Jim) of Warwick, and Linda Kirk Hart of Cairo and many nieces and nephews all of which cherish blessed memories of a very special and generous person in their lives.

Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Parker-Bramlett Funeral Home in Camilla, Ga.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 7053 Ga. Hwy 112, Camilla, Ga. 31730.

The family will be receiving friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Burgess, Jr., 153 Pineridge Dr., Leesburg, Ga. 31763.

A true man of God and a man I looked up too. He was the reason I continued my education at Albany State. Class of 1977.
