Afternoon traffic veers onto U.S. 19 South in downtown Leesburg. Government officials have added a second left turn lane to ease traffic issues during peak school hours.
LEESBURG, Ga. — Generally, it’s not too difficult to negotiate traffic in downtown Leesburg. That changes, however, at least two times a day when school is in session.
Motorists leaving Lee schools on Highway 32 and Highway 195 are accustomed to bottlenecks each day at the start and end of the school day as they try to get back on U.S. Highway 19.
That situation has been improved with a new intersection designed by the Georgia Department of Transportation and financed by the agency, the city of Leesburg and Lee County.
Leesburg City Clerk Casey Moore said the major change is that the intersection now provides two left turn lanes for those turning south on Highway 19.
“This should help eliminate some of the traffic congestion associated with school traffic,” Moore said.
In addition to adding a second turn lane, Moore said that the project includes relocating some parking spaces, adding planters and adding the countdown equipment to let people know when the light will be changing.
“We’re a little worried until people get adjusted to the changes,” Moore said. “They just have to remember to stay in their lanes as they turn and not fade into another lane.”

Better late than never! What I don't understand is why they put all the schools so close together in the first place!
