ALBANY, Ga. — For 100 years, the U.S. Post Office at 345 West Broad Ave. has been moving letters and packages in and out of Albany. That will end on Dec. 2 when the United States Postal Service closes the facility.

“Those decisions are based on volume of retail sales per square foot of retail space,” said Stephen Seewoester of Corporate Communications for the Postal Service’s Florida District. “That facility is down over the past several years, like many others are.”

In fact, according to Seewoester, the national Postal Service is down more than 40 billion mail pieces over the past five years. To survive, the Post Office relies on the sale of its products and services.

USPS is a semi-federal agency in the sense that it comes under Congressional control and oversight. However, it receives no tax money to fund its operations. Seewoester said the primary reasons for the decline of the U.S. Postal Service has been the rise in popularity of email and other electronic communication.

Seewoester said none of the employees at the West Broad Post Office will be terminated, but will be transferred to other Albany facilities.

Frances Krack, a local representative for Lone Star Equities in New York, which owns the Griggs Building where the post office is located, said her company has no firm prospects to occupy the property once it is closed by USPS.

Another blow to Downtown. Where is Don Buie when we need him? How about more Downtown spending Sinyard and Marietta?

I have used this Albany landmark hundreds of times to give directions to our office to out of town clients. EVERYONE knows where the post office is.

What about the effin P.O. Boxes!!!??? Do we have to change all our letterheads, envelopes and business cards? Will they move the exact number to another Post Office?

Complain all you want but USPS is losing billions of dollars a year so something has to change. This is no different than any other business consolidating locations when they are losing money. As it stands right now our tax dollars may have to bail the USPS out because they cannot meet the payment schedule they have set up. If they have to close 50% of the post offices and eliminate Saturday delivery to not need tax dollars to survive I am all for that.

I am glad they are not terminating any employees. I have used that post office several times in the past back in the days we went shopping downtown. This was before the Albany Mall was even built. However I have probably only been to that post office 3 times in the past 10 years at most. Sad to see it go, but for what businesses they do have downtown it will make it harder for them. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I routinely use that post office location. I hate to see this happen.
