Pirates’ McCutchen 0-for-4 vs. Brave as Giants’ Posey now leads by .010 points for NL batting title with one game remaining

SAN FRANCISCO — Buster Posey is in the driver’s seat in the race for the National League batting title heading into today’s final game of the regular season.

The Lee County native hit a solo home run in his first at bat in Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the 4-3 win, raising his batting average to .337. With the homer, Posey took a .010 lead over Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen (.327), who was 0-for-4 Tuesday against the Braves.

Posey hasn’t locked up the batting title, but it would be virtually impossible for him to get passed by McCutchen on the final day. If Posey went 0-for-6 and McCutchen went 6-for-6 today, the Pirates’ outfielder would beat out Posey by a single percentage point.

If Posey holds on to the lead he will join Bubbles Hargrave (Cincinnati, 1926) and Ernie Lombardi (Cincinnati, 1938 and Boston, 1942) as the only catchers to win an NL batting title in baseball’s modern era.
